📈 Why Aluminium Pricing Has Changed So Dramatically in 2026

Over the past few months, we’ve had many clients asking:

“Why have aluminium systems become so expensive?”
“Why can’t pricing simply be held for 6 months?”

The answer lies largely in the global aluminium market.

As can be seen from the latest LME (London Metal Exchange) aluminium pricing graph, aluminium has increased significantly since January — moving from approximately USD 2,800/T to peaks above USD 3,650/T in only a few months.

For the aluminium industry, this has a major impact because:
• Aluminium billet pricing is directly linked to LME rates
• Most architectural systems, hardware and accessories are imported or tied to international pricing
• Exchange rate fluctuations further amplify costs locally
• Powder coating, glass, freight and energy costs have also increased simultaneously

Unlike standard retail products, façade, window and door projects are often priced months before manufacturing even begins. Holding pricing for extended periods during volatile commodity markets exposes manufacturers and contractors to substantial financial risk.

This is why many suppliers today:
• Reduce quotation validity periods
• Include escalation clauses
• Require material procurement earlier in the project lifecycle
• Cannot realistically guarantee 6-month fixed pricing without financial contingencies built into the price

Join Phicor Architectural Products

We are looking for an experienced and driven Estimator & Procurement Officer to join our growing team, based in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth).

This combined role has proven highly effective within our business, as the estimator has a detailed understanding of the project requirements, materials, systems, and procurement timelines from the outset. This allows for improved project planning, procurement accuracy, cost control, and smoother project ex*****on.

Scope of Works

The successful candidate will be involved in estimating and procurement for:

* Aluminium windows & doors
* Curtain wall façades
* Unitized façade systems
* Shopfronts
* Composite cladding systems
* Balustrades
* Architectural glazing systems

Key Responsibilities

Estimating

* Preparing quotations and tender submissions
* Material take-offs and cost analysis
* Reviewing architectural and structural drawings
* Reviewing specifications and contract documentation
* Assisting with value engineering and alternative proposals

Procurement

* Procuring materials, hardware, and glazing for awarded projects
* Liaising with suppliers and manufacturers
* Managing procurement schedules and lead times
* Ensuring materials are ordered in line with project programmes
* Monitoring supplier pricing and availability
* Assisting with stock control and procurement tracking

Requirements

* Strong organizational and communication skills
* Ability to read and interpret technical drawings
* Good understanding of costing, procurement, and project coordination
* Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
* Experience within the construction, manufacturing, aluminium, or façade industry will be advantageous
* Experience with Reynaers, Crealco/Wispeco, or similar systems will be advantageous
