Hey there all gardeners, time for some more hints and tips to help with any garden queries you might have. Gardening should be a very therapeutic activity, and it is.....but we are saddled with extreme heat, erratic rain, water restrictions, the quandary of more hard landscaping and less soft to save water, rising costs etc, which make our decisions harder with regards to what we do.
Take heart, here are some interesting tips to think about which can save money.

1. Plants you can use to keep bugs away :

Rosemary - fleas, ticks
Peppermint - spiders, mozzies, ants
Catnip - mozzies
Marigold - mozzies, aphids
Bazil - mozzies, houseflies
Lavender - moths, fleas, flies, mozzies

2. Natural turf/lawn is an incredible material, a healthy lawn can survive on just 25mm of water per week.
It can also absorb 20,000l in a single instance before reaching its limit.
This makes natural turf/lawn a champion in helping to prevent floods over large areas.
Yet as more gardens get covered in concrete, plastic turf or paving it increases our flooding risk.
Rather opt for natural and let our lawns be the earth's sponge.

All the best and happy gardening

Hi there all you greenfingers, with summer upon us we're spending more and more time outdoors either working or relaxing.
There's nothing more relaxing than the sound of running water while chilling outside, whether it's a small water feature, a stream or a small aerated pond. Please remember that still standing water will attract mozzies so it's essential to keep the water moving via a small pump.
Water features are ideal for planting various water plants and adding a few fish to keep the water clear. The Hadedas and Kingfishers will love you so it's preferable to pull a net over it.
If you're in the market for a water feature please don't hesitate to contact us.
Have a wonderful weekend and happy gardening.

Hello again all gardeners, with the erratic rain that we're getting we have to supplement with municipal water which becoming more and more expensive. Not only that but we're facing restrictions and watershedding to alleviate the pressure on our water resources.
Planting more and more indigenous plants, reducing lawn sizes, grouping plants with similar water requirements goes a long way to reduce consumption.
Using drip irrigation helps as well as there is no water loss due to wind blowing the water onto paving etc. This type only targets the root areas of garden bed plants.
Bubblers for trees does exactly the same thing......no wastage
Please be aware that going overboard when wanting to replace lawn with gravel, paving etc isn't always a good idea as this can easily raise the temperature in the garden making it unpleasant to spend time outside.
Waterwise lawns like Buffalo, Cynodon helps as they need far less than Kikuyu.
Lots to think about, stay safe, happy gardening

Good day fellow gardeners, are you struggling to get rid of weeds in your lawn and paving? With all the wonderful rain we've got recently, the weeds are literally taking over. Now, in the growing season, is the right time to spray because they are actively growing and absorb herbicide a lot more effectively. Avoid using one particular herbicide constantly as resistance can be built up by the plants over time.
For example, when spraying weeds in lawn areas, alternate between herbicides with the active ingredients Dicamba and MCPA as this will produce better results.
Remember more is not better but a waste. Stick to the prescribed/recommended dosage. Leave at least an hour drying time before watering or rain otherwise the chemical is washed off and you've wasted your time.
Stay safe and happy gardening.

Good afternoon all you avid gardeners, after the good rain we received the lawns are starting to green up nicely. If you're thinking of fertilizing your lawn I would suggest you look at something like 2:3:2 or Superphosphate or one of the organics like Bounce back. We need to stimulate root growth to wake the grass up. Avoid high nitrogen content fertilizers as they will burn your lawn if there is insufficient rain or you don't have an irrigation system. Remember to check your local schedule for watering times should you have water restrictions.
Should you require a quote for an irrigation system, please don't hesitate to contact us.
Stay safe and happy gardening.
