Same colour. Three walls. Three completely different rooms.

Nothing here changed except the sheen level, and most people never think about it until the wall is already up.

A matt finish absorbs light from every direction. It reads deeper and softer, it evens out an imperfect plaster run, and it forgives the wall for being a wall.

Add sheen and the light comes back at you in an organised way. The same colour reads lighter, cleaner and slightly more saturated. It also shows every ridge, patch and roller stop you left behind.

And sheen decides how the surface lives. The wall in a passage gets shoulders and school bags against it. That wall has to be washable, which is a job for a satin finish like Satin Silk. The wall behind your headboard does not, and a matt will look better there.

So settle the finish before you argue about the colour. The finish is half the colour.

A 1Lt sample for a tester costs a bit, but it’s worth it. Repainting a lounge costs a weekend and most of a Saturday's temper.

Here is how to use one properly.

Two coats. Not one. The first coat is still fighting whatever is underneath it, and the second coat is where the real colour finally arrives.

Onto a loose board, not the wall. Roughly A2. Now you can carry the colour to the window, prop it against the skirting, hold it beside the curtain, and walk it down the passage.

Leave a bare border. If your test patch is surrounded by the old wall colour, you are judging it against a neighbour it will never actually have.

Then look at it three times. Morning. Midday. Under the lamps at night. If you still like it at seven in the evening, buy the tin.

Give it a full day to dry first. Wet paint is not the colour yet.
