The New Artists Exhibition at the Pretoria Art Association features the work of selected fresh talents, and I am quite thrilled to be a part of it. This is the second one of my works on show.

Another skyscape, this work was inspired by a cloudburst near Graaff-Reinet in the Camdeboo one late summer afternoon some years ago. I remember watching spellbound as we drew closer to the gathering storm and the skies suddenly opened, drenching the land in torrents of welcome rain.

Capturing the vast, sweeping openness of Southern African landscapes demand wide-format panoramic canvases.

Hi everybody, and especially my loyal followers 😃
Business Suite has been reminding me lately with increasing insistence that I haven't shared a post in 15 days and that sharing regularly helps me connect with my audience. So if you are still here, thank you for your loyalty and patience! Life has been happening, and frankly I would rather make and do things than talk about making and doing them. Anyway, here is my long overdue (and no doubt eagerly awaited 😉) post about my new work currently on exhibit at the Pretoria Art Association.

The inspiration for this cloudscape is a photo I took in March 2024 near Riemvasmaak in the Green Kalahari. Normally an arid region, it has been blessed by an unusually good rainy season and the veld bore grateful witness to that. Even so, a rainstorm is always noteworthy event, and this one was spectacular.

We have come to the last one of the succulent portraits that are currently on show at Tina Skukan Gallery. This one is named quite aptly Perseverance, and I would like to thank my followers for sticking around long enough for me to get through a full dozen of these!

Perseverance is being steadfast despite obstacles, difficulties and discouragement, a form of courage that allows one to endure long-term challenges. This virtue is embodied through the Echeveria plant's remarkable ability to survive and thrive in harsh, arid environments. Even when a flower stalk has been damaged, the Echeveria finds the resources within itself to produce yet another one.

The background of this painting is exuberantly chaotic and a stark contrast to the compact form and neatly-arranged leaves of the succulent.

Second to last of my succulent portraits currently on show at the Easter Exhibition at Tina Skukan Gallery (which will end on the 30th of April, so you have only one more weekend left to view it!) is this rather thorny Aloe fireball, which I have named Chastity. As a virtue, chastity is far more than mere abstinence; it is about self-control and a reverence for the self and others. Chastity requires discipline and fortitude to maintain integrity amidst temptation, like an Aloe thriving in a harsh environment.

I have been quite busy the past week finishing off a couple of new works for an upcoming exhibition, but I would like to say a few words about the last few of my succulents portraits. This is one of an earlier set of works that I have expanded upon for the Easter Exhibition.

To possess the virtue of serenity is to be calm, peaceful and untroubled. It is about accepting things one cannot change and having the wisdom to focus on the present moment. Echeviera elegans embodies the virtue of serenity through its symmetrical silver-blue leaves arranged in a perfect rosette. The random marks in the background provide a chaotic contrast to its gentle, cool presence.
