I would like to Introduce Micon coatings to you
Micon Coatings is a company involved in the specialised industry of developing and manufacturing passive fire retardant coatings and chemicals for the past 20 years. Micon Coatings manufacture’s a range of fire retardant coatings and chemicals used to protect thatch and timber.
There Thatchsayf and Thatchbor products have achieved enormous success both locally and internationally. Micon is the worlds’ only supplier of pressure impregnated thatch which not only
fire retards the roof but also biologically preserves it.
Micon Coatings pride themselves in being able to supply a quality 100% locally manufactured product where quality control forms an integral part of the product, from the factory to the point of application. Specifiers, applicators and the end user can be assured that all products have been tested by either the CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research) or similar international and local testing agencies.

Micon Coatings have an ongoing research and development programs in place to keep abreast and improve our products in the market.
Micon Coatings have targeted all sectors of the market including the domestic, industrial, building, aviation and mining industries.
With all the recent fire’s and total loss to Thatch roof residences ,Lodges etc ,the insuring of thatch roof’s have been put under the spot light and many of the Major Insurance houses are calling
for their clients roof’s to be fire re****ed and a certificate issued .
I would like to take this opportunity to state that Insurance companies are asking their clients to use a Fire retardant that is SABS approved, no fire retardant can be SABS Approved it can only be tested and certified ,and to be certified it would of had to have completed all five tests of the ASTM-E108 as set out below.
Unfortunately, the industry is littered with unscrupulous manufacturers whose claims and advertising are at the least unethical.
A number of manufacturer’s are currently being taken to task by the SABS, for using claims such as:
SABS approved, SABS TESTED, and SABS COMPLIANT. All of which are unlawful infringements of the SABS trademark. These products are mainly composed of polymer/emulsions, which have a degree of fire retardancy. They blanket the outer thatch layer. This allows water ingress and creates a humid and festering environment in the thatched layer, which makes it extremely difficult for the thatched
layer to dry out, as there is little space for the thatch (which in its self is a living and breathing organism) to breathe. This certainly does lead to accelerated weathering and rotting of the thatched roof. Also they tend to falsely advertise that their products have been tested to the ASTM E108 test method set out below.
The test method (ASTM E -108) covers the measurement of the relative fire characteristics of thatched roof coverings under simulated fire originating outside the building as set out in a-e
below:
a) Intermittent flame exposure test;
b) Spread of flame test;
c) Burning brand test;
d) Flying brand test;
e) Weathering test.
Thatchsayf Flame Retardant still remains one of only fully certified Flame Retardant products available on the market.
Thatchsayf has been tested and certified to all sections of the above named criteria to be fully certified.
All other products, save for Thatchbor, on the market have only been tested to 1 or 2 of the above requirements.
Micon’s Thatchsayf was developed by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research CSIR – and has been manufactured and marketed by Micon Coatings under license from us since its development.
The composition of the Thatchsayf formulae is unique in that it in no ways binds the thatched layer together. It is applied to dust the individual grass stems, which on exposure to heat intumesce and
then bind the stems together cutting off the oxygen between the burning grass.
The Thatchsayf product has been on the market for over 18 years and we have protected over 2.5 million m2
With the devastating fires of recent, the thatching industry is in disarray and home owners developers are keeping away from thatch roofs, which is sad as thatch roofs have always been a
roofing type that has been in high demand in this country.
With the right precautions and safety measures put into place a thatch roof can be just as safe as
any other roof on the Market. In saying this it is critical that the home owner, Insurance companies be educated on which fire retardant’s are fully certified and how this certification is
obtained.
It would be a great loss to a home owner who has had his roof fire re****ed on instructions from his insurer, and the roof burns down and then the claim in repudiated as the fire retardant used
did not meet the above criteria
Please feel free to contact me at any time if you need any further information or assistance on the
above matter.
Yours Sincerely
