Literacy extends beyond mere words; it shapes both experiences and futures. The Beyond Words initiative, led by The Cotton On Foundation in partnership with The Nomzamo Lighthouse Foundation and The Bookery, aims to improve literacy in South Africa, where the need is most urgent, prompting a reimagining of the library at Masivuke Primary School to address this challenge.

This project emphasises sustainability, adaptability, modularity, and biophilic design, creating a warm and flexible learning environment. It prioritises durable materials and enhanced natural lighting, while calming colours promote focus and creativity.

This transformation has turned the library into a multifunctional space that fosters literacy in disadvantaged communities. We are proud to collaborate with our partners to bring this vision to life.

Here's a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the Fieldworks Design Group office, where our design process extends beyond the drawing board.

Before materials make their way into our projects, we opt to get hands-on with the products we specify, testing, comparing and understanding how they behave, feel, age and contribute to the spaces we design.

For us, specification is not just about selecting products. It is about making considered decisions that support the quality, functionality and longevity of the built environment.

From sample testing to site application, every detail is part of the process.
