𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐞
How can the planning of a mature living building support privacy, social connection and access to outdoor space?
Our design for the serviced apartment building at Stellenbosch Village, next to De Zalze in Stellenbosch, explores these priorities through the relationship between accommodation, communal amenities and landscape.
The building comprises 100 serviced apartments, including a 14-bed frail care component. The ground-floor plan brings together a generous communal restaurant, lounges and outdoor spill out spaces, providing settings for both social activity and quieter daily routines.
A double-volume entrance foyer establishes a welcoming arrival. Within the deep floor plate, a landscaped courtyard introduces natural light and creates a sheltered outdoor space for residents, including those receiving frail and dementia care. Seating, planting and a planned bird aviary make this courtyard an integral part of the residents’ everyday environment.
The external renderings illustrate how the boundary treatment extends the architectural approach into the streetscape. White plastered walls, softened profiles and rhythmic piers reinterpret Cape Dutch influences through contemporary detailing. Fine metal screens and layered planting balance enclosure with visual connection to the surrounding landscape.
Together, the drawings and visualisations communicate an approach to mature living centred on dignity, everyday choice and a strong sense of place.
