Section 1: The Purpose and Scope of SANS 10142-1
Know what the standard expects — before you start pulling cable.
The SANS 10142-1:2024 is not just another book on a shelf. It’s the law-backed blueprint for electrical installations in South Africa. Understanding Section 1 sets the tone for everything else.
🧭 1. Purpose of the Standard
This standard is here to:
*Ensure safety of persons, animals, and property,
*Define what makes an installation “safe” and “functional”,
*Provide clear guidance for compliance, inspection, and certification.
If you install according to SANS 10142, you meet the minimum safety level expected by law.
🛠 2. What the Standard Covers
It applies to all low-voltage and extra-low voltage installations, including:
*Residential, commercial, and industrial buildings,
*Solar PV systems,
*Temporary installations (like on construction sites),
*Agricultural, caravans, marinas, and more.
It also includes rules for:
*Testing and certification (CoC),
*Maintenance and alterations,
*Reticulation systems up to the point of supply.
📌 Fun fact: If it carries electricity and it's not part of Eskom or the municipality’s reticulation network — this standard likely applies!
⚠️ What It Doesn’t Cover
This document does not apply to:
*High voltage installations (above 1000 V AC and 1500VDC),
*Mining equipment,
*Electrical machines covered by their own standards.

Because ignorance is not an excuse. Whether you’re a master electrician or a new candidate working toward your wireman’s license, your work is legally judged by the guidelines in Section 1.
