When comparing quotations, the cheapest number on the page can be the most expensive decision you make.

A professional quotation should tell you far more than the final price. It should clearly define the scope of work, the quality of materials, programme assumptions, exclusions and the responsibilities of everyone involved.

When those details are missing, projects often end up paying for them later through variations, delays or compromised quality.
Before accepting any quotation, ask one simple question: "What exactly am I getting for this price?"

🤔 Why do some contractors quote over the phone, and others need to visit?

Short answer: It depends on the project.

I can quote REMOTELY (Desktop Quote) for:
✅ Interior/exterior painting (clear photos, no structural issues)
✅ Standard tiling (known m², no level changes)
✅ Paving (straightforward areas, good drainage)
✅ Bathroom refresh (cosmetic only, no plumbing moves)

I NEED to visit for:
🚩 Cracks, damp, or structural concerns
🚩 Multi-story work (scaffolding requirements)
🚩 Complex plumbing/electrical (hidden risks)
🚩 Body corporate buildings (access, regulations)
🚩 Heritage/old properties (substrate unknowns)

If a contractor quotes R80K over the phone for a full bathroom gut-reno without seeing it? Run.

If they insist on visiting for a simple bedroom repaint? They're wasting your time (and padding the quote).

🚨 5 Red Flags Your Painter Missed (That'll Cost You Thousands)

Just quoted a repaint job in Northcliff where the previous contractor "forgot" to:

1. Seal cracks before painting → Paint peeled in 6 months
2. Use primer on new plaster → Uneven finish, had to redo
3. Check for damp → Mold bloomed through 3 months later
4. Protect floors properly → R15K to refinish wooden floors
5. Agree on sheen level → Client wanted matte, got gloss

The project looked "done"... until it wasn't.

Prep work is 60% of a quality paint job. If your quote doesn't itemize prep, ask why.
