Out of sight, out of mind might seem like a great philosophy to use. But when it comes to treating your home’s drains and toilets like a garbage disposal, this could come to back to bite you.

Household pipes are not designed to act as a repository for everything that will fit down the hole. We see a lot more cement in drainpipes that you’d expect. When cement and other building products are diluted and moving through a pipe, things may appear to be fine at fist. But it can quickly turn into an absolute nightmare once the taps are turned off.

So what problems can cement cause in drain pipes?
- Once water flow stops, sand and other particles settle in bends, joints and low-lying sections of pipes.
- Of course, if there is no water in that section of the pipe and the product dries, it becomes hard.
- When water flows again, this hardened mass will often remain stuck.
- This then acts as a dam reducing the pipe’s diameter and flow rate, trapping other matter such as food, hair, grease etc.
- With time, a drain blocked with cement will block and back up, meaning it will need to be cleared out.
- This then may result in pipes having to be replaced or relined depending on how long the blockage has been there and what level of damage was done.

If you are planning any sort of renovation where cement, grout or glue are involved, be sure to discuss the disposal of these materials with the contractor so you don’t end up out of pocket trying to fix a problem that was avoidable.
