Please Note: We have received increased reports of children being kidnapped at restaurants and shopping malls in the Jhb Northern suburbs.

A suspect tried to take a couple’s 5 year old child at a restaurant tonight in Northcliff. Our security staff at the centre saw this suspicious activity and managed to get the child to safety, apprehend and arrest the suspect while the getaway vehcile sped off.

* Please ensure you know where your children are at all times and visa versa.

* Make sure your children know not to listen or talk to any strangers that approach them in a mall, restaurant or public area.

* Make sure your children know where you are seated before letting them go to the play area.

* Unfortunately, when children are unsure of their situation they tend keep quiet and follow instruction especially when talking to adults. let them know it is okay to shout or scream for mom/dad if they are pulled anywhere / told to follow or anything suspicious.

Keep safe!

HOW TO SURVIVE A ROBBERY
2009-09-03
Virginia Keppler
Pretoria – Crime victims should beg for their lives and tell the robbers to take everything, in which case their lives might be spared, an academic has told a public lecture at the University of South Africa (Unisa). People were also advised to have a panic button in the bathroom, since most men were held in bathrooms while robbers went through the house.
This was the advice of Dr Rudolph Zinn, of Unisa's department of criminal and forensic investigations, on Wednesday. This advice was based on interviews with 30 convicted house robbers in Gauteng prisons. They said if victims begged and followed orders, it was seen as a good sign by the robbers.

Don't speak to robbers

According to the criminals who participated in the study, victims' lives would be spared if they remained calm, didn't fight back, kept their hands visible, maintained their original position and only spoke when asked a question. "However, if the victim doesn't play along and follow orders, they make it look like they are hiding lots of money in the house and the longer the robbers stay in the house, the greater the chance of a r**e occurring. "Give them what they want so they can disappear quickly," said Zinn. These criminals also felt that if they used more violence, they got more loot from their victims.

Respect

Zinn said the youngest hijacker he spoke to was 9 years old, and the youngest hijacker who had shot and killed his victim, was 13. "He said the victim had not respected him as a man." Thirty-two percent of the respondents said they want no eye contact with victims, and expect victims to follow orders. Furthermore, the study showed that between 53% and 79% of house robberies take place thanks to the insider-information they obtained (from, for instance, a domestic worker), and that 17% of security guards and 17% of police officers were involved in house robberies. It also emerged that the robbers drove through neighborhoods at night and by day, to observe the security measures in place, and whether it would be easy or difficult to get in and out at a possible target.

About cash and jewellery

Zinn said the criminals saw farm attacks as just another form of house robberies. "The police usually take longer to get there and these are easy targets." "They also target [people of] any race, and studies have shown that former black neighborhoods are hardest hit by crime." "There are usually four criminals per house robbery, and eight per farm attack." A total of 83% of house robberies are about getting cash and jewellery, and robbers spend their loot on luxuries like expensive clothes and fancy cars. According to these criminals, it didn't matter how a home and family was secured - if robbers wanted to get in, they would.

7 WAYS TO PREVENT CYBER -BULLYING

1. Talk

Every psychologist will tell you that the best way to help your child or student is to have a conversation first. Be patient and ask a child about the problem in general: what is cyber-bullying, does he/she know someone who is being bullied, what children should do if notice acts of bullying. This way you will see how much your child is involved in the situation and which side he/she is on.

2. Use celebrity card

Modern children are the same as we used to be. They choose role models and follow them in every way. Now they choose singers, sportsmen and actors. Nowadays, a lot of celebrities are supporting cyber-bullying victims. Many of them post numerous comments against online bulling on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Demi Lovato, Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus are the most popular teen singers who talk about this problem out loud.

3. Monitor online activity

Luckily, cyber-bullying has one advantage: you can notice it and save the evidence. If taking their phone away is not an option, you can install iPhone monitoring app Pumpic. It allows monitoring social media activity, including Facebook and Instagram, view all text messages (even deleted ones), call logs and general online behaviour. You can block and control the child’s phone remotely through PC or personal cell phone.

4. Engage parents and youth

Create a community for adults and pupils to send a unified message against cyber-bullying. Establish a school safety committee that will control and discuss the problems of online bullying. You can create policies and rules, including cyber-bullying reporting system. It is important to make the main objectives known to parents, school and children.

5. Build a positive climate

School staff can do a big deal to prevent cyber-bullying. As a teacher you can use staff and parents meetings and even send newsletters. Use your school website to create a page and forum, where parents can discuss the problem. You can also engage bullies and victims by giving them mutual tasks, so they can try to see each other from a different perspective.

6. Volunteer in the community

As a parent, you can prevent bullying by working in the community. With your experience on the ground, appropriate strategies can help identify the victims and redirect bullies’ behaviour.

7. Restore self-respect

Remember that the ultimate goal is to protect and restore the victim’s self-respect. Act thoroughly; fast decisions can only make things worse. Talk to someone about the problem before responding. Collect the evidence and join with parents or teachers to figure out the possible best choice to stop cyber-bullying among children.

HOW TO PREVENT CAR BREAK-INS

Theft prevention starts before you even leave your vehicle
Smash-and-grab thieves typically aren’t criminal masterminds who craft clever schemes to swipe your stuff. Most are casual opportunists. They see something they like, so they break in and take it. So before you get out of your car, make sure your valuables are out of sight.

NEVER leave these things lying out on your seats, dashboard or floor:

- Phone
- Purse or wallet
- Laptop (or its bag)
- A briefcase or backpack
- Shopping bags
- An MP3 player or other small electronics
- CDs if you still use them
- Cash – yes, even loose change/coins
- Your keys – it actually happens!

CAR SMASH-AND-GRABS HAPPEN OUT OF SIGHT

Most thieves go solo. The last thing they want is a crowd of onlookers with cell phones and pepper spray ready. So try to keep your car highly visible:

* Park near other people. Go for busy lots where there’s plenty of pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
* If you'll be away from your car after dark, park in a well-lit area or near a lamppost.
* Choose a lot with an attendant over one without.

DISCOURAGE thieves with anti-theft measures

Thieves are also lazy. With car break-ins, they’re usually not looking for a huge payoff. What this type of thief wants is a quick thrill – or maybe a little extra revenue – for as little work as possible. By making your car a harder target for these people, you make it less desirable. So:

* Always lock your doors and roll up your windows when you park.
* Activate your security system if you have one.
* Consider window tinting (if permitted by local laws), since it makes casing your car more difficult.
* Use after-market measures, like mechanisms that lock the steering wheel to protect your car and alert thieves that you've taken extra security measures.
* Don’t use the console or glove box as mobile lock boxes. These are obvious to thieves, too.
* Don't hand them the keys
