A spreadsheet can't tell you where the shade falls at 2pm.

That's something you only learn by standing on the land.

Every farm looks straightforward on paper. Hectares, crops, irrigation schedule, a few numbers on an energy bill. But paper doesn't show you the things that actually shape a good energy strategy.

🚜 Where the cold storage sits relative to the grid connection

A factory runs the same way, every day. A farm doesn't.

That's the difference most energy systems get wrong.

Irrigation pumps that only run in season. Cold storage that needs power non-negotiably, every single day. Equipment that sits idle for months, then runs flat out during harvest.

Design a system around "average" usage, and it'll fail a farm every time. There is no average on a farm.

🌾 Pivot points and pumps need power exactly when the crop needs water, not when it's convenient for the grid.
🌾 Cold storage can't afford even a short outage during a heatwave.
🌾 Peak season and quiet season can look like two completely different operations, energy-wise.

A good energy system for a farm isn't a smaller version of an industrial system. It's designed from scratch around how the farm actually operates, season to season.

Most farmers start with the same question: "How many panels do we need?"

Wrong question.

The real question is: "What am I actually paying for?"

Here's why that matters.

Your tariff structure often decides whether solar makes sense; before a single panel goes on the roof.

Before you talk panels, ask yourself:
⚡ How many connection points does your farm actually have?
⚡ Are they all on the same tariff, or a mix?

⚡ Are demand spikes; pumps and pivots kicking in at once; pushing your charges up without you realising?

They start with a walk through the farm.

Recently, our team visited a farming operation that was looking at solar to reduce electricity costs. On paper, the opportunity seemed straightforward.

But after spending time on-site with the owner, walking the fields, reviewing pumping infrastructure, discussing irrigation schedules, and understanding how the operation actually functioned day-to-day, the conversation changed completely.

When Off-Grid Actually Makes Sense for C&I

Most commercial and industrial sites don’t need to go fully off-grid.
But in a few situations, it is the right choice.

Here’s when off-grid becomes practical:
✅ Remote locations
Where grid access is limited, unreliable or simply not available.

✅ Mining operations
High-demand sites far from substations, where grid extensions are costly.

✅ Agri-processing in rural areas
Especially where voltage swings and frequent outages disrupt operations.

✅ Sites with extremely unstable supply
If the grid can’t support your production reliably, independence may be the safer path.
