I am trying to understand why a stranger’s absence has left me feeling an ache so deep it defies logic, a physical pain in my chest that makes me ask.
How can a heart break so completely over someone it never actually held?
The brutal truth is, Dolly was never a stranger to me. When the doors were shut and the world outside was terrifying, she was the only one allowed into my isolation. Through her lyrics and her music, she reached directly into my soul. She understood the human heart better than anyone, and she gave words to the unspoken pain, joy, and desperate longing I was too afraid to voice out loud. For me, losing Dolly is the devastating reality of losing a favorite aunt—the only one who truly saw me.
Growing up as a closeted gay man, childhood and adolescence didn’t feel like a sanctuary; they felt like a cage. The world was a cold, conditional, and lonely place. But Dolly was always there. She didn’t just tolerate my existence from a distance; she fiercely, loudly, and unapologetically loved us.
When it felt like everyone else was turning their backs, or when I feared they would if they knew the truth, her voice was a constant, warm embrace through my headphones. She stood by me through her music—a steady, joyful guardian angel who kept me alive, making me feel seen, safe, and worthy of love just as I was. She was the aunt who loved me unconditionally, holding my hand through the melodies before I could even find the courage to accept myself.
The world today feels so terrifyingly dark today without her amazing smile and sparkle, her quick wit, and that boundless, protective kindness. I feel lost because I haven’t just lost an artist I admired. I have lost my foundational comfort. I have lost the safety net that caught me when I was growing up afraid.
Thank you, Dolly Rebecca Parton , for pouring your bleeding heart into everything you did, and for showing me what unconditional love actually feels like.
Your light has faded but your music will live forever .
