Heading away for the August school holidays? Before you lock the door and start your trip, take a few minutes to prepare your home too.

Check that all doors, windows, gates and the garage are properly secured. Test your alarm and outdoor beams, clear away any branches or plants that may trigger sensors, and make sure the backup batteries for your alarm and gate motor are working.

Ask someone you trust to collect parcels, move bins and check on the property occasionally. Light timers can also help maintain a sense of normal activity while you are away.
Pack away ladders, tools and outdoor furniture that could be used to access your property, remove valuables from view, and avoid leaving spare keys in familiar hiding places.

MOST IMPORTANTLY, let Calibre know that your property will be unoccupied and confirm that we have your correct contact numbers, keyholder details and access information.

A few simple checks before you leave can help you relax and enjoy the break knowing that everything at home has been taken care of.

Travel safely and enjoy the school holidays.

Wherever the holidays take you, Calibre has your back at home.

MEET THE TEAM | OYSTER BAY 👋

Meet Buks and Maranda Degenaar, the husband-and-wife team managing Calibre Security’s Oyster Bay division.
Originally from the North West, Buks was a farmer before joining Calibre three years ago. Since making the move, he has fallen in love with the peace, quiet and close-knit community of Oyster Bay.

Maranda previously worked as a primary school maths teacher before joining Calibre three years ago to manage the Oyster Bay division alongside Buks. When she is not working, she enjoys reading, beach walks and serving within the local church community.

Together, Buks and Maranda bring dedication, care and a strong sense of community to everything they do. We are proud to have them leading our Oyster Bay team and looking after the area they now call home.

Say hello to Buks and Maranda in the comments! 👋

Many false alarms are caused by everyday things that are easy to overlook - like pets triggering outdoor beams, overgrown bushes moving in the wind, low batteries, or gates and doors that haven’t closed properly.

While false alarms are sometimes unavoidable, taking a few minutes to check your property can make a big difference.

Here are a few simple ways to help reduce unnecessary activations:
✔ Keep pets away from outdoor beams where possible.
✔ Trim trees and shrubs around sensors.
✔ Check that gates, doors and windows close securely.
✔ Replace alarm batteries when they’re due.
✔ Let us know if you’ve made changes to your property, such as renovations, new pets or altered access points.

Every false alarm means one of our response vehicles is attending an incident that turns out not to be an emergency. By helping reduce unnecessary call-outs, you’re also helping keep our officers available for genuine emergencies in our community.

If your alarm has been activating unexpectedly, don’t ignore it. Contact the Calibre team and we’ll help identify the cause so your system continues to protect you when it matters most.

You may have seen messages circulating online about planned protest action around South Africa.

We encourage our community to stay calm, avoid sharing unverified information, and rely on official updates from SAPS, local authorities and trusted community channels.

Calibre will continue to monitor local activity and remain in communication with the relevant role-players where needed.
This is not a message to create alarm, but simply a reminder that calm, informed communities are safer communities.

As always, we are here, we are aware, and our focus remains responsible community safety.
Keep Calm and Call Calibre.
