How does one calculate the amount of mulch one needs in the garden?
Mulch is usually spread between 50 and 100 mm thick. At 50 mm thick, one cubic metre (1 000 litres) covers 20 square metres; at 100 mm thick, it covers 10 square metres.
Square metres (sqm) are calculated by multiplying the length of an area in metres by its width in metres.
Mulch depth should be thicker on bare soil and thinner around shrub and tree stems to avoid possible rot.

What is mulch?
Mulch is a layer of material (such as decaying leaves, wood chips, bark or compost) that is applied around plants.
Garden mulch can be organic or inorganic. Organic mulch, which I prefer, boosts the various natural processes that help plant growth and improves the overall condition of the soil.

Mulch Man personally delivers mulch and compost in the Stellenbosch and Helderberg areas. For deliveries per cubic metre, I use a small truck with a tipper load-bay. Mulch and compost can also be delivered in bags. Although this is a more expensive option, it is easier to handle and to distribute the mulch or compost in your garden. Off-loading is quick and simple.

I personally deliver the following mulches:

- Rough-cut pine mulch, which is good for areas under and around shrubs. It forms a matted layer that does not give way when you walk on it.

- Wood-chip pine mulch, which has a uniform chip/chunk size, is safe for pets' paws and bare feet and is suitable for play areas.

- Compost, which is rich in nutrients and provides an ideal environment for bacteria, fungi and other decomposing organisms to do their work in your garden.
