14/06/2024

Safety is our top priority, especially during school holidays when children are home and out in the community more often. We want to ensure that children remain safe during their time off.

With school holidays upon us, ensuring the safety of children at home becomes a top priority.

Wilderness Defence Force has put together some practical tips to keep your little ones safe and secure during their break:

*Secure Your Home*

Lock Doors and Windows: Make sure all entry points are locked, even when youโ€™re at home. Consider installing security gates and burglar bars for added protection.

Alarm Systems: Ensure your alarm system is in good working order. Teach your children how to use it and make sure they understand the importance of setting it when no one is home.

Surveillance Cameras: Install cameras around your home and check them regularly to ensure they are functioning correctly.

Emergency Contacts: Keep a list of emergency contact numbers by each phone in your home. Make sure your children know how to use them.

Stranger Danger: Teach your children about the dangers of opening the door to strangers and how to recognize suspicious behaviour.

Supervised Play: If children are playing outside, ensure the area is secure and check on them regularly.

Buddy System: Encourage children to play in pairs or groups and always inform an adult of their whereabouts.

Monitor Internet Use: Keep an eye on your childrenโ€™s online activities and educate them about the risks of sharing personal information online.

Secure Devices: Ensure all devices are protected with passwords and appropriate security software.

Ensuring the safety of children during school holidays is a critical responsibility. By taking proactive measures to secure your home, educating your children on safety protocols, and staying prepared for emergencies, you can create a safe and secure environment for your family.

At Wilderness Defence Force we are committed to helping you protect what matters most.

Implementing these tips will not only provide peace of mind but also allow your children to enjoy their holidays to the fullest. Remember, safety starts at home, and together, we can keep our communities secure. Stay vigilant, stay safe.

Update 6: Garden Route Floods 13h00 Update on 6 June 2024
Issued by the Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM) Joint Operations Centre (JOC) at 13h40)
HUMANITARIAN ASSISTANCE
Areas cut-off that have been reported to the GRDM DMC and to whom humanitarian assistance would be provided for are as follows:

STATUS QUO
The GRDM's JOC remains active at its Head Office in George. However, the water levels of the rivers are gradually decreasing. Gerhard Otto, GRDM Head of Disaster Management, stated, "The water levels thankfully did not reach the 1996 levels at the Calitzdorp Hot Springs. Although the water spilling from dams in the catchment matched the 1996 level, they did not peak simultaneously. This resulted in the river flow moving south in 'waves' rather than as a single, destructive giant wave."
Over the course of the incident, 17 people were rescued. These include four (4) women, nine (9) men and 4 children.

If a residence is prone to flooding, people should move to higher ground to ensure the safety of family members, pets, and livestock. Do not attempt to walk, swim, or drive through floodwaters, as these can be deeper and faster-moving than what is assumed.
Report weather-related incidents to the Garden Route Emergency Call Centre on 044 805 5071.
