Trial has begun in a case in which a 38‑year‑old Chipata accountant is accused of murdering his 25‑year‑old girlfriend during a sleepover at his house.

The accused, Edward Mwanamuchele, is charged with the murder of Rhoda Munkombwe at his home in the Kanjala area.

The matter is being heard by Chipata High Court Judge Charles Kafunda, with the State lining up six witnesses to testify.

The deceased’s father, Terry Munkombwe, a police officer based at Chipata Central Police Station, told the court that the couple had only known each other for about nine months before his daughter’s death.

Mr Munkombwe, who broke down during his testimony, said his daughter died a painful death after suffering a cut to the top of her head allegedly inflicted by the suspect. He explained that she was rushed to Chipata Central Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

He added that when he arrived at the hospital after being informed of the attack, he found his daughter restless on the hospital bed with a deep cut in the middle of her head.

The trial continues before Justice Kafunda this afternoon.
