Last time you saw this ground it was a trench. Here it is on pour day.

The full plinth beam grid, cast in one continuous pour. Concrete batched off site and delivered by truck, then placed, worked and levelled by hand. From here the walls go up and none of this is ever visible again — which is exactly why we photographed it.

If you're comparing quotes for a build right now, ask each contractor what happens below ground level. The cheap quote and the sound quote usually differ right here, and you won't be able to tell the difference once the slab is down.

While the Waterfalls foundation was going in, this was happening across town.
Suspended slab reinforcement at Kaunda Square. Every bar cut, bent and tied to the engineer's drawing -
correct spacing, correct laps, correct cover. Cover is the one most people have never heard of: it's the few
centimetres of concrete between steel and air. Too little and the steel rusts, and a slab you paid good money
for starts failing from the inside.
It's checked before the pour because after the pour, nobody can check it again.

Every house you admire in Lusaka is standing on something nobody photographed.
This is our Waterfalls site last month. Trenches cut, blockwork up, plinth beam formwork set and braced. It is
the least exciting stage of any build - and the one that decides whether your walls are still straight in ten years.
We've spent these past months heads-down on sites like this one. Fewer posts. More concrete.
That changes here. Over the next two weeks we'll take you through this build stage by stage, right up to the
pour.
