🚧 Side Drain Details (Civil Engineering Guide)
A side drain is a linear drainage structure constructed along roads, highways, and pavements to collect and safely convey stormwater away from the roadway. It helps prevent waterlogging, erosion, and pavement damage, thereby increasing the service life of the road.
Key Construction Details:
✅ Typical internal drain size: 450 × 450 mm (can vary as per design).
✅ Wall thickness: 75–100 mm depending on drain size.
✅ P.C.C. bed (1:4:8) with 100 mm thickness provides a stable foundation.
✅ 20 mm thick cement plaster (1:3) on the inside ensures a smooth, watertight surface.
✅ Provide a proper longitudinal slope (fall) for efficient water flow.
✅ Expansion joints should be provided at every 10 m to reduce cracking.
✅ Backfill should be done with well-compacted selected material.
✅ Optional RCC cover slabs (M20 grade, 75 mm thick) can be used in pedestrian or traffic areas.
✅ Keep the drain clean and free from debris for uninterrupted drainage.
✅ Drain dimensions should always be designed according to expected runoff and site conditions.
