_Thieves Steal 10,000 iPhones Using Advanced Techniques to Unlock Devices_
Lusaka, Zambia - A shocking revelation has emerged in the world of cybercrime, as six men were apprehended by the Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) Cybersecurity Task Force for stealing over 10,000 iPhones. The suspects, identified as Leonard Kasonde, John Phiri, Lewis Daka, Ephraim Bwalya, Stanley Banda, and Mike Mwanza, were caught in Kabanana while driving an unregistered silver Lexus.
How the Thieves Operate
The suspects revealed that when iPhone users activate "Lost Mode" on their devices, they exploit the situation to gain access to personal information and commit further damage. By displaying the owner's mobile number, the thieves can impersonate the victim and access accounts linked to the device ยน.
Advanced Techniques Used
According to sources, the suspects possess advanced techniques to unlock devices, including those protected by fingerprint or face ID, making it difficult to track them using IMEI numbers. This has led to a broader network targeting electronic devices and financial accounts.
Investigation and Recovery
The investigation, which was sparked by the theft of an iPhone 14 Pro Max, led to the recovery of three iPhone 14 Pro Max devices, four Tecno Fortune phones, 30 Airtel SIM cards, and 25 MTN SIM cards. The suspects are also linked to a K900,000 unauthorized access case in Choma.
Advice from Authorities
The public is advised to report stolen phones and SIM cards to ZICTA immediately by dialing *707 #. Additionally, users should avoid activating "Lost Mode" unless absolutely necessary and consider switching to eSIM technology to enhance security and reduce the risk of SIM card theft.
Ongoing Investigation
