On the DC side of a solar system, properly sized protective devices are just as critical as on the AC side. PV fuses, PV breakers, and surge protection devices (SPDs) safeguard the array, cabling, and inverter from faults unique to DC circuits, which can be more dangerous due to sustained arcs and higher fault currents.
🔑 Advantages of DC Protection Devices
1. PV Fuses
~ Protect individual strings from reverse currents when one string fails and others feed into it.
~ Prevent thermal runaway and cable overheating.
~ Allow selective isolation of faulty strings without shutting down the entire array.
2. PV Breakers
~ Provide manual and automatic disconnection of DC circuits.
~ Enable safe maintenance by isolating PV strings or combiner boxes.
~ Rated for DC arc suppression, which is harder to extinguish than AC arcs.
3. Surge Protection Devices (SPD)
~ Divert lightning-induced surges away from the inverter and batteries.
~ Protect against transient overvoltages caused by switching or grid disturbances.
~ Extend lifespan of PV modules and electronics by reducing stress from repeated surges.
