Mugo Real-Life Stories: The Detour to Destiny (Part I)

​The Blueprint of an Ambition

​In 2003, I concluded my Upper Sixth academic year at Gaza High School in Chipinge Town, having completed a rigorous subject combination of Mathematics, Accounting, and Geography. Armed with a natural affinity for numbers (dy/dx) , my career trajectory appeared clear-cut.

My professional aspirations were firmly anchored in the financial sector, with a primary focus on pursuing a degree in Accounting, Business Studies, or Banking and Finance.

​When the time arrived to apply to the prestigious University of Zimbabwe (UZ), I structured my preferences in a precise order of ambition and pragmatism:
* Accounting
* ​Business Studies
* ​Economics
* ​Rural and Urban Planning (I first saw this programme with the longest name on the APPLICATION FORM)

Carrier guidance lessons never came across me in my childhood chapter.

​However, competitive admissions serve as an uncompromising gatekeeper. While my results yielded a commendable 12 points—a solid achievement—they fell just short of the exceptionally high cut-off thresholds established for the university's premier business programs. Minimum entry points for Accounting and Business Studies were 14 and 13 respectively---doubt crept in

I had to brace myself for the reality that entry into the nation’s apex institution might remain out of reach.

*The Trial of Anticipation*l
​Seeking a reliable alternative, I also directed an application to Midlands State University (MSU), targeting Banking and Finance. Given my MATHEMATICS prowess, I maintained a high degree of confidence, convinced that an offer of admission was virtually assured.

​August 2004 arrived, bringing with it a profound wave of anxiety. As the University of Zimbabwe commenced the distribution of acceptance letters, I witnessed my peers celebrate their admission offers. The celebratory boasts of successful friends only magnified my own despair, My only trump card and remaining hopes depended on the outcomes from Gweru.

​At the time, MSU did not issue individual acceptance letters; instead, they published the registry of successful candidates in the national print media. I vividly recall meticulously scanning the columns of The Sunday Mail and The Sunday Times, searching for my name. Discovering its absence was a deeply disheartening setback.

*Persistence Amid Setbacks
​Refusing to passively accept this outcome, I traveled to Gweru on the university's opening day, determined to explore alternative entry pathways through sheer persistence. I spent seven, long uncertain days in the suburb of Senga, attempting to secure an audience with admissions officials. Unfortunately, every conventional avenue remained closed.

​In a final effort desperate bid, I was advised to apply for a newly introduced Local Governance program. I hastily completed the paperwork and, finding the Registrar’s office closed for lunch, slid the application beneath the door.

​With no immediate response to show for my efforts, I returned home to Chipinge, exhausted but resolute. The DREAM of higher education felt temporarily out of reach. To maintain momentum and serve my community, I turned to the Ministry of Education and was deployed as a temporary educator at Chinaa Secondary School, where I was tasked with teaching Accounting and Mathematics.

The Unexpected Knock
​My tenure at Chinaa Secondary School commenced on September 9, 2004. I tgrew myself into the work, finding solace in the CLASSROOM. However, fate had a final, dramatic plot twist in store.

​Three weeks into my teaching post, my mother made an unexpected journey to visit me at the school. It is a 9km one way journey from our village to the school. In her hands, she carried an official envelope from the University of Zimbabwe—a late-intake offer of admission for a Bsc in Rural and Urban Planning.

​"Mwanagu!," she said, looking at me with a blend of pride and anticipation, "I received this letter for you. Are you interested?"
​"Yes, Mhamha. I am very interested," I replied without hesitation.

​A brilliant smile broke across her face. Within hours I bid farewell to school authorities, I packed my bags, closed my exercise books at Chinaa Secondary School and embarked on the journey to the University of Zimbabwe. Unbeknownst to me at the time, I was stepping directly onto the path of my true professional calling: a career as a Spatial Planner, with a defining specialization in Traffic and Transportation Planning.
