🔥 How hot can a steel member get before it becomes critical in fire?

AS 4100 Clause 12.5 gives a simple but powerful relationship between the member utilisation ratio and its limiting steel temperature.

The key idea is straightforward:

A heavily utilised member has less reserve capacity, so its allowable limiting temperature is lower.
A lightly utilised member has more reserve, so it can tolerate a higher temperature before reaching its fire design limit state.

This is why structural fire design is not just about “what temperature does steel fail at?” The real question is:

How much capacity does the member still have at that temperature under the fire design actions?

A good reminder that in fire engineering, load level, reduced material strength and temperature are all connected.

Another milestone for Axioms Engineering — framing inspection completed for a new sporting clubhouse in Kippa-Ring, QLD. 🏗️

What I enjoy about steel framing is that you can physically see structural engineering working: trusses, columns and bracing all forming a continuous load path, transferring wind and gravity loads safely down to the foundations.

A framing inspection is more than checking whether members are installed — it is about confirming that the connections, bracing, member locations and overall structural system work together as intended by the design.

Always rewarding to see calculations and drawings become a real structure on site.

During a recent site inspection at Mt Gravatt for a Class 10a warehouse footing, I observed localised soil caving within bored pier excavations. This can occur due to loose or granular soils, softened ground from moisture or groundwater, unstable fill, prolonged exposure of the bore before concreting, or disturbance during drilling. The main concerns are loose material collecting at the base, loss of the intended founding condition, irregular pier geometry, reduced concrete quality, and difficulty maintaining the required reinforcement position and cover. Before concreting, all loose material should be removed, the required founding depth and competent bearing stratum confirmed, and where the bore cannot remain stable, temporary casing or another suitable support method should be considered and reviewed by the engineer.
