A multi-bay shed can be one of the most useful buildings on a family property.

Each bay can have a purpose.

One for the car.
One for the mower and tools.
One for camping gear.
One for bikes and boards.
One for the workbench.
One for the things that do not belong in the house but always seem to end up there.

The best multi-bay sheds are not just bigger.

They are better organised.

Good bay planning can make it easier to separate clean storage from dirty gear, keep tools away from vehicles, and avoid turning the whole shed into one large pile of mixed-up stuff.

A well-planned shed does not just add
space.

It adds order.

Cladding Finishes Explained 🎓
COLORBOND® vs COLORBOND® Ultra vs ZINCALUME®

When choosing a shed finish, it is easy to treat COLORBOND® and ZINCALUME® like they are just colour options.

They are not.

They are different steel finish choices, and the right option depends on the property, the environment and the way the shed will be used.

At a simple level:

• ZINCALUME® steel gives you the exposed metallic finish
• COLORBOND® steel gives you a pre-painted finish in a wide colour range
• COLORBOND® Ultra steel is a higher-spec COLORBOND® option for harsher environments

It is also worth understanding that COLORBOND® is not simply a different “core” steel. It is a painted steel finish system over a metallic-coated steel base, designed to provide both appearance and protection.

ZINCALUME® is often chosen for rural sheds, machinery storage, farm buildings, budget-conscious projects or sheds where a coloured architectural finish is not the main priority.

COLORBOND® is usually selected when the shed needs to complement the house, match other buildings, suit a streetscape or provide a more finished appearance.

COLORBOND® Ultra is considered where the site is more demanding, such as harsher marine environments, heavier salt exposure or more aggressive coastal conditions.

That does not mean every coastal shed automatically needs COLORBOND® Ultra.

It means the location needs to be assessed properly.

A shed built inland, a shed near the coast and a shed close to breaking surf may all need to be looked at differently.

Before choosing your shed finish, think about:

• Where the shed is being built
• How visible it will be
• Whether the property is rural, suburban, industrial or coastal
• Whether it needs to match the house
• The level of finish expected
• Maintenance and washdown requirements
• Warranty considerations
• Whether ZINCALUME®, COLORBOND® or COLORBOND® Ultra is the right fit

The best shed finish is not always the cheapest option, and it is not always just the colour that looks best on a sample.

It is the finish that suits the building, the property and the environment it is going into.

🏗️ PLANNING A SHED IN THE BUNDABERG REGION?

Before deciding where it goes - or even how big it can be - it’s worth knowing what actually applies to your property.

We’ve put together a Bundaberg Region Shed Approval Guide covering some of the most common questions we deal with every week:

• Boundary setbacks
• Maximum shed sizes and heights
• Building close to or on a boundary
• Building approval vs planning approval
• Council siting relaxations
• Residential, rural residential and rural properties
• Bushfire, steep land and other site constraints
• Site-specific wind classification

The rules can vary considerably depending on your lot size, zoning, overlays and the proposed location of the building, so there isn’t always a simple one-size-fits-all answer.

Our guide breaks the basics down in plain English and explains what happens when your preferred shed location falls outside the standard requirements.

And if a relaxation or additional approval is required, Spartan Sheds can prepare, lodge and manage the process as part of your project.

Shed Rules Explained 🎓
How Big Can a Residential Shed Be in the Bundaberg Region❓️

It is one of the most common questions people ask:

“How big a shed can I build at home?”

In the Bundaberg Regional Council area, the answer depends partly on the size of the property and whether the shed remains within the thresholds set out in Council’s Amenity and Aesthetics and Removal or Rebuilding Policy.

For domestic outbuildings in an urban area, Council’s current policy sets the following thresholds before referral to Council is triggered:

Urban Area - Domestic Outbuildings⏬️

Lots under 800m²
➡️ Maximum combined outbuilding floor area: 90m²
➡️ Maximum building height: 4.8m
➡️ Maximum length or width: 12m

Lots from 800m² to under 2,000m²
➡️ Maximum combined outbuilding floor area: 120m²
➡️ Maximum building height: 4.8m
➡️ Maximum length or width: 12m

Lots 2,000m² and over
➡️ Maximum combined outbuilding floor area: 150m²
➡️ Maximum building height: 4.8m
• Maximum length or width: 16m

A few important points⏬️

1. “Combined floor area” matters

These thresholds apply to the combined floor area of all domestic outbuildings on the property - not only the new shed being proposed.

2. Staying under the area limit is not the whole test

A shed can still trigger a referral if it exceeds the applicable height or maximum horizontal dimension, even if the floor area is under the threshold.

3. This is not the only approval consideration

These figures relate to Bundaberg Regional Council’s amenity and aesthetics referral triggers. Other matters may still need to be considered, including:

• Building approval
• Setbacks and siting under the Queensland Development Code
• Zoning
• Overlays
• Easements or services
• Other site-specific constraints

The practical takeaway⏬️

Two residential properties in the same region may have very different shed options depending on lot size, existing outbuildings and the proposed dimensions of the new structure.

Good shed planning starts with checking the property and the applicable rules - not simply choosing a size from a brochure.

Roller Door Sizes Explained🎓

When planning a shed, it is common to say:

“I need a 3-metre-high roller door.”

But there are a few different measurements involved, and they are not all the same thing.

A lot of shed companies will give nominal door sizes ( a hopeful estimate) or curtain size, that may change during construction, simply because their design software is not advanced enough to calculate the exact opening size during the design phase.

At Spartan Sheds, our advanced design software allows us to guarantee clear opening heights and widths.

Let me explain ⏬️

1️⃣ Opening Size

This is the clear structural opening in the wall of the shed - the space the vehicle, trailer or machinery needs to pass through.
Often refered to as daylight opening, in the industry.

2️⃣ Door Curtain Size

The roller door itself is made larger than the opening so that it overlaps and seals correctly against the opening and tracks.

For example, Taurean’s windlocked roller doors are 100mm wider than the daylight opening required. This allows the width needed to run the door in the side tracks.

3️⃣ Headroom and Side Room

A roller door also needs physical space⤵️

✅️ Above the opening for the rolled-up curtain, brackets and hardware
✅️ Beside the opening for guides, brackets and, where applicable, motor clearance
✅️ Behind the opening for the door roll and mounting arrangement

This is why the shed wall height, opening height and usable drive-through clearance all need to be considered together.

Why this matters⏬️

If someone wants to comfortably drive a caravan, excavator, boat tower or tall machinery into a shed, it is not enough to simply nominate a door size and hope it all comes together, as so many do.

The correct question is⏬️

“What clear opening and usable access height do I actually need?”

From there, the shed wall height, framing and door selection can be designed to accommodate the door size required.

At Spartan Sheds - we guarantee clear, daylight opening sizes, right from the start.

Shedspiration Saturday🥳

Now this is how you do a shed... 😎

This impressive build measures ⤵️

➡️ 21m long x 8m wide
➡️ 3.7m to the gutter
➡️ Finished in COLORBOND® Windspray®

The shed was designed as three equally sized 7m sections, each with a clear purpose⏬️

✅️ 7m open carport - generous undercover parking with easy access and plenty of clearance.
✅️ 7m enclosed garage - secure storage, workshop space or room for the toys, with 5m wide roller door.
✅️ 7m enclosed mancave at the rear - a dedicated space to unwind, entertain or make your own

With each section providing 56m² of usable area, the layout delivers serious versatility while keeping a clean, balanced overall design.

A great example of a shed that combines vehicle storage, secure workspace and lifestyle space under one strong, practical roofline.

Caring for Your Shed Cladding: The Areas Rain Does Not Wash 🧼🧽🧹

COLORBOND® steel is designed for Australian conditions, but like most exterior building materials, it benefits from the right maintenance.

One of the biggest misunderstandings is assuming that rain washes the whole shed equally.

It does not🚫

Rain will naturally wash many exposed roof and wall areas, but some parts of a shed can stay relatively sheltered and may collect dust, salt, dirt or other airborne contaminants over time.

These areas can include⏬️

➡️ Wall sheeting under awnings or eaves
➡️ Areas protected from direct rainfall
➡️ The underside or sheltered face of flashings
➡️ Around door openings and tracks
➡️ Walls close to vegetation or other obstructions
➡️ Sides of the shed that do not receive regular rain exposure

BlueScope recommends regular washing with clean, fresh water for surfaces not naturally washed by rain. Where fresh water alone is not enough, a mild solution of pure soap or non-abrasive kitchen detergent in warm water can be used with a soft cloth, sponge or soft-bristle brush, followed by a thorough clean-water rinse.

The practical takeaway⏬️

A shed does not need to be treated delicately, but it should not be completely ignored either.

A simple wash-down of sheltered cladding areas from time to time can help preserve the appearance and long-term performance of the finish.
And, preserve your Bluescope warranty.
