We've contracted a team of specialist consultants as the first step in determining what is needed to allow Maitland Gaol to safely reopen to the public.

Reports are expected back in July and will allow us to develop both the timeframe and budget required for reopening the site.

The 170 year old heritage listed site, which is managed by Council on behalf of the NSW Government, was closed following the unexpected discovery of significant fire and electrical safety issues.

Discover the intriguing tale of William Eckford, a familiar face at Maitland Gaol in the 1860s.

Despite being released on a technicality in 1867, his newfound freedom was short lived. Just two weeks later, he found himself back behind bars after attempting a break in.

Interestingly, Eckford's skills as a blacksmith led to a unique arrangement, allowing him to remain in Maitland to fulfill his duties despite being sentenced to Darlinghurst Gaol.
