We have covered some of the branches on our nectarine tree, the rest is for the birds for this coming season.

When this tree has its big prune after fruiting, we can keep the tree at a height that’s easier for us to cover with our wildlife safe net.
We’ll be using a crossed arch system, being able to pull the net tight and pinning into the ground.

It’s been really difficult to not try and do everything in a short amount of time, as much as I’d like to, it’s just not practical or sustainable for us.

Small and slow solutions, taking our time, making well thought out decisions. Observing, then interacting (or sometimes, not interacting).

In reality, this garden will provide us with an abundance of food but these systems take time to implement, working as much as possible with what we have, the ecosystem already in place and looking after and encouraging biodiversity.

Busy day today, especially in the garden!
Fiiiinally chopped, dropped and turned in the green manure crops in the last bed we were hoping to use for summer.

Mulched the bed with straw, I’ll add compost and aged manures, in hopes I might be able to plant in a couple of weeks but I’m thinking it might be our first bed for Autumn planting.
We shall see 🌱🌿

This months newsletter will be about a few things but I wanted to talk about our fruit trees …
The ones we inherited with the property, the ones I have planted and the ones still in pots 🪴

We have thinned the apricots and protected the fruits with wildlife friendly methods.
In fact, because of the wildlife we have here, it’d be nice to share a bit ….

Newsletter will arrive in your inboxes by the end of the week 🍎🍑🍓🍊🍋🍐🫐🍏

Today I planted out three of our zucchinis and our pumpkins 🥳
Check out the roots systems on the zucchini!

The pumpkins were planted in a foot high mound of compost and aged manure then mulched with straw. They are very heavy feeders so this should do them for the season other than some banana tea etc.

The mounds are each side of the hot compost pile and there is lots of room for the vines to roam …. Fingers crossed! Area looks smaller in the photo or I’m just hugely optimistic 😂😂

The tomatoes and eggplants will go in next and I planted Speckled Cranberry beans as the Scarlet runner beans were a bit old.
I have lettuce to go out too but trying to let them get big enough to handle any attack from snails or slugs (HUGELY optimistic).

My next newsletter will be out late this week 🥳

I reckon it might be good to try some carrots as well 🥕

Sooo as you can see, I haven’t chopped and dropped one of the veggie beds, my bad… however, I’ll still do it and turn in some manures and compost as well. We’ll plant this bed out last, may even leave it until Autumn 🍂

So far I have got three lots of hot compost on the go, that’ll be for autumn too.
Once we have distributed it, we will do a HUGE hot compost for late winter/spring.
We have a compost pile where some of our potted fruit trees will be planted next winter.

Lots and lots happening and planting out starts this week, the beans have already started popping up too 🫘🍅🥒🍆🌶️

I have left pockets of the green manure cover crops get to maximum flower and seed.
I’ll take some of the seed heads off, some varieties I’ll let self seed and the rest will be chopped up once flowering has finished.

The great thing about having your own garden, you can pretty much do what you want and I live the wildness, the biodiversity… our garden is thrumming with life 🥰

I love that the garden is growing on the pathways and everywhere, some things are kept on top off but mostly, curious to see what’s in the seed bank.

When we viewed the property in February, we noticed that the paths around the veggie garden were Tuscan topping or perhaps a little lighter.
They looked gorgeous but for us, created quite the glare so we let whatever was in the seed bank, grow.

Weeds or not, they serve a welcome softness for us when we are in the veggie patch, it feels cooler and the drainage is still there of course.
I’ve sown calendula and buckwheat around, planted some Alyssum too. Great for our pollinators, ground cover and my eyes 😍😍😍

I love a garden to look like this, it seems to offer a more rich biodiversity in this beautiful ecosystem.
Something new every day, greets me when I go outside.
It’s a real treat to watch this property through the seasons, really good way to get to know all it has to offer 🥰🌿🌱🌻🌸🪲🪲
