🕷️ Spring in Perth = spider season. Don't panic — here's what you need to know.

As the weather warms up, spiders get more active. They're hunting more, building webs more, and yes — wandering into your home more.

Most of what you'll find in your Perth backyard is harmless. Garden orb-weavers, daddy long-legs, wolf spiders — all doing their thing.

But there are a few you should know:

⚠️ Redback spider — Found under outdoor furniture, letterboxes, kids' play equipment. Painful, potentially dangerous. Common in Perth.
⚠️ White-tailed spider — Often found indoors at night. Not as deadly as the myth, but a bite still hurts.
⚠️ Funnel-web — Rare in WA, but worth knowing if you're near bushland.

😰 You just found a mud tube on your skirting board. Now what?

Termite mud leads (also called mud tubes or shelter tubes) are one of the clearest signs of active termite activity. They're built from soil, wood particles, and termite saliva — and they exist for one reason: to protect termites as they move between the soil and their food source (your home).

What NOT to do:
❌ Don't break it open — disturbing an active colony can cause them to retreat deeper and change their access point, making them harder to find and treat
❌ Don't spray insecticide on it — this kills a few workers but alerts the colony and can ruin baiting treatments
❌ Don't assume it's old — even inactive tubes mean termites were there

What TO do:
✅ Leave it exactly as it is
✅ Note where you found it (take a photo)
✅ Call a licensed pest inspector immediately

🪳 You killed the cockroach. Problem solved, right?

Not quite.

A single female German cockroach can produce an egg case (ootheca) containing 30–40 eggs — and she carries it until just before hatching, making it nearly impossible to kill with surface sprays.

Here's the maths:
→ One female → 5–6 egg cases in her lifetime
→ Each case → up to 40 eggs
→ Nymphs mature in 6–12 weeks
→ One cockroach in January can mean hundreds by March

Over-the-counter sprays kill what they touch. They don't break the breeding cycle.

Effective cockroach treatment targets the whole population — adults, nymphs, and eggs — using gel baits, residual sprays, and knowledge of where they hide (behind fridges, inside switchboards, under dishwashers — places you'd never think to spray).

If you've seen one cockroach, there are almost certainly more.

🐝 Spring is here — and so are the wasps.

For most people, a sting is painful but manageable. For about 1 in 100 Australians with an allergy, it can be life-threatening.

Anaphylaxis from bee and wasp stings sends hundreds of Australians to hospital every spring and summer. And here in Perth, European wasps are increasingly common — more aggressive than paper wasps and capable of stinging multiple times.
