Before the first tube goes up, this is what the solution looks like.

3D scaffold design isn't just a visualisation tool — it's a risk management tool. Every platform level, every stair configuration, every tie location and access route is resolved in the model before anyone sets foot on site.

This is the view from the working deck on a marine scaffold scope.

The teal water visible below isn't a backdrop — it's the environment the access system is sitting in. Every platform, every connection, every egress route was designed knowing that what's underneath is not ground.

Marine scaffold at this level requires a fundamentally different approach to anything on land. Tidal variation, wave loading, marine-grade material requirements, and the absence of any conventional ground support all factor into the design before a single tube is placed.

What you're looking at is a system doing its job — holding a crew above open water safely, in a live marine environment, while maintenance works proceed on the structure around them.

Containment scaffold is one of those scopes that looks simple from the outside — and anything but once you're designing it.

The blue sheeting visible here isn't just a dust barrier. It's a fully engineered containment system that has to manage debris, dust and potential hazardous material throughout the works — protecting the surrounding area and anyone passing through it while maintenance crews work on the structure behind it.

The tower configuration gives the crew full vertical access across the face of the structure, with the containment system integrated at every level. The system has to be stable enough to resist wind loading across the full height of the sheeted face — which, on a structure this tall, is a meaningful engineering consideration.

Ground-build and crane-lift. Still one of the most underutilised methodologies in the access industry — and one of the most effective.

The principle is straightforward: build the scaffold module at ground level where it's safer, faster, and easier to inspect — then lift it into final position as a single engineered unit.

Here's why it matters:
→ Reduces working-at-height time during the build phase significantly
→ Every connection is made at ground level and inspected before the lift
→ A pre-lift check confirms the unit is complete and load-rated before it leaves the ground
→ Install time at height is reduced to positioning and securing — not building from scratch

When the structure extends out over open ocean and coal vessels are loading alongside you, the access brief gets a lot more specific.

Our team delivered a multi-scope scaffold package for a Shiploader at one of Queensland's largest coal export facilities.

The scope included suspended and supported access platforms beneath and around the shiploader boom, containment systems across deck-level working areas, and blue-sheeted enclosures to manage the works environment during active maintenance.

The operational context here is unlike most sites: the structure moves, the tidal environment is constant, coal export operations continue around you, and every component must be designed around the machine's operational clearances.

Complex environment. Multiple concurrent access configurations. Delivered to program.

Run, Forrest, run! 🏃

The MI Scaffold team recently took on the Mackay Marina Run Corporate Challenge — a 5km run/walk along the Mackay waterfront — and decided that if you're going to show up, you may as well show up in character.

Full Forrest Gump kit. Yellow tees, red shorts, long hair, beards and all. Kids included.

Not only did we complete the 5km, we also took home the prize for Best Dressed — which, let's be honest, was never really in doubt.

Great to see the team come together outside of work, get active in the community, and have a genuine laugh doing it.

Well done to everyone who laced up (and bearded up) for the day.

Before we hand over any scaffold for use, every access and egress route has to be proven — not just on paper.

For this scope, our team engineered a dedicated emergency access stairway as part of the scaffold system. Before handover, our onsite Emergency Response Team put it to the test — running a live stretcher chair trial down the stairs to confirm the system could support a safe casualty evacuation if it was ever needed.

The stair geometry, landing widths, handrail positioning and platform clearances were all designed with this scenario in mind from the outset. Emergency egress isn't an afterthought — it's part of the access brief.

Safe scaffold isn't just about getting people up. It's about getting them down — under any circumstances.
