180 tonnes of Layher Allround. One wharf. A crew that got it done.

This scaffold system was installed across wharf assets in Gladstone as part of a significant port remediation program — providing working access to the underside of the wharf deck and pile structure above the waterline.

The water visible beneath the platform gives you the environmental context immediately:
• this is a live marine environment, and every component had to be designed and installed with that in mind.
• Marine-grade materials.
• Tidal variation accounted for in platform levels.
• Fall protection over open water throughout.

At 180 tonnes of Layher Australia on site, the material volume alone tells you the scale of this scope. Supervision, leading hands, scaffolders and engineering and drafting all provided as part of a fully integrated labour and materials supply
package.

Scale matters in scaffold design — and this is what scale looks like.

This multi-storey scaffold system wraps the full face of a large industrial structure, providing working access across every elevation simultaneously. Bay after bay, level after level, the system has to perform consistently from the ground deck right to the top.

What changes as you go higher is everything the eye can't see: the wind load the system is carrying increases with every level, the bracing requirements change, and the tie pattern into the host structure has to be resolved against whatever the building can actually accept at each elevation.

A system this size doesn't just get built — it gets designed. Every bay is part of an engineered solution that accounts for the full height of the structure, the load cases at every level, and the access requirements of the crew using it from the bottom deck to the top.

The result is a system that looks straightforward from the outside.

Multi-level marine access. Open ocean. A crew that delivered.

This suspended scaffold system was installed along the face of a bulk coal terminal structure at Abbot Point — one of North Queensland's major export facilities. The scope forms part of a significant remediation program on the outloading infrastructure, delivered in partnership with a specialist paint and blast contractor.

Layher's specialised FlexBeam product was selected specifically for this project — providing superior working deck capacities and clearances that a standard scaffold configuration simply can't match in this environment.

The project is DIDO-resourced and fully self-sufficient — project management, supervision, leading hands, scaffolders, and engineering and drafting all operating as one integrated team on site.

When the work is over open water, containment isn't optional — it's engineered in from the start.

The net system visible beneath this coal terminal shiploader structure is a purpose-designed debris containment solution — catching any material, tools or equipment that might otherwise fall directly into the marine environment below during maintenance works on the structure above.

The containment net has to be load-rated, properly tensioned and anchored to the scaffold structure — not an afterthought draped underneath at the end. It has to cover the full working footprint. And it has to remain effective for the duration of the works regardless of weather and tidal conditions.

The inside of a structure tells a different story to the outside.

This internal scaffold stair system was installed inside a large industrial vessel — providing safe, compliant access between levels for the inspection and maintenance crew working inside the structure.

Working inside a vessel presents a specific set of constraints. Every component has to be lowered through a manway or access hatch. The stair configuration has to work within the internal geometry of the vessel, which is rarely designed with scaffold access in mind. And the entire system has to be erected, used and dismantled in a confined space environment — with all the additional safe work method requirements that brings.

The stair system delivered exactly that. Clean, compliant, built to fit the space it needed to serve.

Five years. Three legends. 🏆

This month we recognised three members of our Hay Point Maintenance team for reaching five years with MI Scaffolding.

Matt Kennedy — Project Manager, Hay Point Maintenance. Five years managing one of Australia's largest coal export terminals.

Ramon Salandanan — five years on the tools at Hay Point, recognised here by Matt as part of the team milestone.

Cliff Giblett — five years with the MI crew.

Five years on a major marine coal terminal maintenance program isn't just time served — it's knowledge built, relationships earned, and a standard maintained across thousands of shifts.

Before the first tube goes up, this is what the solution looks like.

3D scaffold design isn't just a visualisation tool — it's a risk management tool. Every platform level, every stair configuration, every tie location and access route is resolved in the model before anyone sets foot on site.

What you're seeing here is a multi-level access system designed around existing cylindrical structures — with stair access between each level, full guardrail coverage throughout, and a human figure to communicate scale.

The model answers the questions that cause delays on site:
→ Can the crew access every working face safely?
→ Do stair configurations allow two-way flow?
→ Are all tie locations structurally viable?
→ Does the design match the certified load case?
