A look back at Mount Pleasant 3/3, designed for and built by in 2018.

This design delivers 3 two-level townhomes paired with 3 lower-level suites for a total of 6 dwellings. A restrictive municipal road setback squeezed the site to a 10m buildable footprint. To maximize the tight lot, the architecture moves the private outdoor amenities to the roof, freeing ground-level space for the lower-suite patios.

Contrasting exterior tones and interlocking façade projections anchor the streetscape while complementing the scale and character of the neighbouring homes. To the north, a single structure houses 3 private garages for the primary units.

These sister 4-plex designs use simple forms and classic brick cladding to reflect the timeless energy of Calgary's Altadore. By subtly stepping the units with the slope of the site the Altadore 4+4 could include a low-profile third level with street-facing roof patios, ensuring a respectful distance is maintained from next-door neighbours. This project is proof that middle housing can blend seamlessly into an established community without being overbearing or disrupting its natural rhythm.

Introducing West Hillhurst 4+4

This RCG infill development contributes to the ongoing evolution of West Hillhurst by introducing additional housing in a form that is both efficient and contextually appropriate.

The four primary residences are designed as spacious, multi-level homes with an emphasis on flexibility over time. Each unit includes two large bedrooms with ensuites, with the topmost level providing an additional gathering space, full bathroom, and wet bar rough-ins —allowing it to function as a studio, additional bedroom, or adaptable living area. Below grade, the secondary suites feature oversized windows with deep window wells to maximize natural light and airflow to these one-bedroom units.

The design demonstrates how increased density can be achieved without compromising livability, offering a clear example of how middle housing can be tastefully integrated into Calgary’s established neighbourhoods.

Throwback!

Situated on a 15m x 38m lot, this 4-unit + 4 car garage project maximized site efficiency under the R-CG land use and achieves a density of 68 units per hectare. Completed in 2018, its design features a mix of modern and retro inspired elements that introduces an eclectic vibe to Calgary's Marda Loop district.

Introducing Killarney 8 + 8!

The development permit has been approved for these two four-unit rowhouse buildings, each incorporating secondary suites, for a total of 16 units on a modest site in Killarney, Calgary.

This rowhouse project draws inspirations from industrial and warehouse typologies, expressed through a strong peaked roofline, large loft-like windows, and metal cladding. The result is a modern-industrial infill project that explores a unique approach to missing-middle housing.

Calgary’s blanket rezoning was one of the most significant housing policy changes the city has made in decades. Now, less than two years later, a proposal before Council could reverse it.

In our latest blog, we outline why repealing the R-CG designation would be a step backward for Calgary. From property rights and regulatory stability to housing supply and federal funding, the implications reach far beyond a simple zoning change.

As a design studio working closely with homeowners, builders, and communities, we’re seeing firsthand how these policies shape what gets built—and whether projects move forward at all. We break down the key arguments and what’s at stake for Calgary’s housing future.
