It's back to school time! Did you know that our Retrofit Roadmap identified Atlantic Canadian schools as some of the best candidates for deep retrofits, particularly the one-storey P-12 schools built in the 1980s?

💲Schools have a good business case for deep retrofitting. They have high energy usage alongside long operating hours, so savings accrue more quickly than other Part 3 buildings.

🍎 There is also a strong health and safety case to be made for performing deep retrofits on schools. The deep retrofits will improve air quality for children and youth which will not only improve health outcomes, but also learning outcomes. Further, as weather extremes increase, schools need better air sealing, insulation and cooling systems to keep the students and staff safe and comfortable.

🏅 In the modeled scenarios, even a deep retrofit achieving 51% energy reduction could save $83,000/year in energy costs, freeing funds for school programming.

🗓️ The case for deep retrofits in schools is made even stronger by the predictable schedule. The upgrades can be planned for seasonal breaks and after school hours.

On June 24, we launched the Atlantic Canada Deep Retrofit Roadmap at Retrofit Canada, and since then, it's continued to reach audiences across the region, reflecting growing interest in the opportunities, challenges, and pathways for deep retrofits here at home.

As that momentum builds, we want to take a moment to reflect on the work behind it and the people who helped shape it.

This work didn't happen without an exceptional team.

Our friends from the RFS Energy Consulting team, including co-authors Christina Pidlaski and Emily McIntosh, were instrumental to the project, contributing research, policy advice, editing, and the report's graphic design. A special thank you to co-author Christina Pidlaski, whose research, policy expertise, and two years of steady project management kept everything on track from start to finish.

Retrofit scenarios and energy modelling for Part 9 building archetypes were developed by Ryan Kelly and Mark Robertson of Baseline Energy Analytics. Anne Lombardi, formerly of Integral Energy Performance, brought the same rigour to Part 3 archetypes.
We also extend our thanks to Dr. Wayne Groszko's team at the Applied Energy Research Lab (NSCC Research), including Jacob Woods, Nick Blacklock, Ayah Habboush, Tiankun Deng, and Jake Doiron, whose research contributions helped inform the work, as well as Roth IAMS for providing facility condition assessment data.

Jim Nostedt, founder of the SEEFAR Total Cost Of Building Ownership (TCBO) methodology, completed TCBO models for each retrofit scenario across all 20 archetypes, providing an important lens for the Roadmap.

Each of your contributions strengthened the final Roadmap and helped create a resource that can support building owners, practitioners, policymakers, and others working to advance deep retrofits across the region.

Different contexts. Common aspirations.

This International Youth Day, we're celebrating the young people building skills and exploring careers that will help shape a more sustainable future.

At ReCover, we ask our partners across the deep retrofit ecosystem to help create opportunities for experiential learning. As part of that commitment, we're also creating opportunities within our own organization for young people to contribute, learn, and gain hands-on experience.

One of those opportunities brought Elijah Anderson to ReCover through our collaboration with the Black Business Initiative (BBI). His story is a reminder of the value of creating spaces where young people can learn, contribute, and grow.

"My time at ReCover has helped open my eyes to what I may pursue in the future and overall has been a great learning experience."

In our Building Transformation Program, we include youth job shadowing opportunities as a core requirement in requests for proposals for feasibility study engagements. This helps ensure that young people can gain meaningful, hands-on experience while projects move forward. Currently, six youth are participating in this program through our partnership with One North End (ONE), with three more expected to join later this summer.

Young people share a common aspiration: the chance to learn, contribute, and thrive. What opportunity made the biggest difference in your career journey?
