ReCover's Research Team is developing a suite of cutting edge, AI-enabled decarbonization design tools that aim to accelerate retrofits at scale. Over the next few weeks, we will be introducing you to the tools in development.

First up is our panelization tool! ReCover, in collaboration with 11 Researchers from CIMS at Carleton University, is developing a set of 3 integrated implementation focused tools that make designing panelized deep retrofits more seamless. The web-app based tool will include:

✳️ Panel design functionality based on building attributes data
✳️ AI-chat support grounded in a language learning model
✳️ Ability to submit your design directly to regional panel manufacturers.

We’re translating retrofit strategies into real world delivery tools that reduce ex*****on risk and accelerate projects.

For the past two years, ReCover has been working to answer a deceptively simple question: How do we scale deep retrofits across Atlantic Canada?

To find out, we built the region's most comprehensive building stock database, developed twenty representative building archetypes, and conducted extensive energy, financial, and lifecycle cost modelling.

What we discovered may surprise some people.

The barriers to deep retrofits are not technical. Stay tuned for the release of ReCover's Retrofit Roadmaps.

Most people focus on the upfront cost of a retrofit.
But the real expenses — the ones that quietly drain budgets year after year — sit below the surface.

• High utility bills.
• Escalating maintenance.
• Declining asset value.
• Comfort issues that never go away.

Our Co Founder and Executive Director, Emma Norton, is serving as Chairperson for — helping guide the national conversation on accelerating Canada’s sustainable built environment. As Day 2 Chair, Emma will help set the tone for a conference focused on moving from mission to momentum, and on accelerating meaningful, scalable retrofit action across the country.

Emma will also be sharing an important update during the conference. We’ve been building something designed to bring more clarity, confidence, and direction to deep retrofit planning across Atlantic Canada, and we can’t wait to share it. More to come.

A sustainable built environment starts with clarity, and the confidence to act.

ReCover will be joining leaders from across the country at as a Bronze Sponsor, supporting this year’s theme: Accelerating the nation’s sustainable built environment.

Much of Atlantic Canada’s building stock was constructed before modern efficiency standards. That creates a real challenge for accelerating the sustainability of our region’s built environment, but it also creates a major opportunity.

At ReCover, we help building owners, communities, and partners move from uncertainty to action with clear, whole‑building deep retrofit pathways that strengthen long‑term value and resilience.

We’re also bringing something new to this year’s conference — a resource designed to help accelerate deep retrofit planning across Atlantic Canada. More to come.

A deep retrofit only moves forward when the technical and financial plans align.

Many feasibility studies stop at technical answers. ReCover's Building Transformation Program goes further by modelling lifecycle costs, non energy benefits, and funding pathways so you can compare scenarios with confidence. This step turns a long list of options into a set of financially sound choices.

At ReCover, our work is grounded in purpose: strengthening the ecosystem needed to make deep retrofits achievable, scalable, and accessible.

One of our team members, Steven Li, captures this beautifully:

“My work at ReCover serves a purpose — a cause greater than ourselves. Bridging the gap for building owners with clear, replicable pathways creates real possibilities for better buildings.”

This is what drives us: building the conditions for deep retrofit scale while giving building owners the clarity, confidence, and investment‑ready guidance they need to move forward.

Before you invest in major upgrades, you need a clear picture of how your building is performing today. BTP’s first step identifies energy waste, comfort issues, system risks, and long term renewal needs. This is where building owners often discover opportunities they didn’t know existed.

Our Co‑Founder and Senior Advisor, Lorrie Rand, will be speaking at the 2026 Passive House Canada Conference on May 26.

She’ll present “Technical and Economic Lessons from Halifax’s Falkland Retrofit,” an in-depth analysis into Nova Scotia’s first EnerPHit‑principles project — a mid‑19th‑century timber‑frame home transformed into a high‑performance office through an envelope‑first strategy. The session will cover interior insulation assemblies, foundation upgrades, smart vapour control, and an economic analysis comparing pathways with code‑minimum renovation and new build options.

📅 May 26, 2026
🕒 3:00–3:30 PM PT
📍 Richmond Conference Centre, Richmond, BC

If you’ll be attending , she’d be glad to connect.

On April 1st, Nova Scotia adopted tier 2 of the 2020 Building Code. ReCover's Lorrie Rand shares what that means to make building upgrades more efficient. Also, last December, the Canadian Board for Harmonized Construction Codes (CBHCC) released the 2025 building code - which means stricter requirements for renovations and retrofit work. All these new codes are signals to building owners approach their retrofits with stringent targets in mind.
