Stem and Stalk Landscaping

Stem and Stalk Landscaping Hi. I’m Cathy, a local Guelph landscaper with a different approach to gardening. I practice sustainable landscaping. See my website and posts for more info!

You could almost call it cooperative gardening.

I love the late summer Rose of Sharon’s, Dinner Plate Hibiscus and Fall Anemones. Never a dull moment in the garden.

I have had a few clients lose their Burning Bush this summer. Some great alternatives are Oak Leaf Hydrangeas, Beauty Berry and Viburnums. These all have great Fall colour and interesting berries that add interest in the cold months when nothing is blooming!

I am in love with late summer gardens. I love to see echinaceas and brown eyed susans planted together. Butterfly bushes have come back after a long winter which look so beautiful with lance leaved coreopsis.

I love Toad Lilies! When one feels like all the best of the summer flowers are done this exotic beauty comes out. It is native of Asia and has such an interesting flower with beautiful speckles!

So many beautiful summer blooms. Brown Eyed Susans, Phlox and Spigelia. I love seeing the abundance of beauty in the late summer months. All that planting, mulching and composting work pays off. Visit stemandstalk.ca if you need help with your garden.

These no fail ground cover plants are perfect to plant in those spots in the garden where nothing seems to grow. Those shady dry spots under evergreens are the hardest to fill with beautiful plants. Lamium, Pachysandra and Sweet Woodruff are my go to plants for those difficult garden areas.

This garden features Crocosmia, Persacaria and lots of Sneezeweed. This colourful summer garden is a delight to look after. This garden is a central feature of the property so we have kept trying different plants to keep it colourful year round.

What is blooming in August? Crocosmia! Soon followed by Rose Mallow and Asters. These are great additions to keep the garden looking colourful for as long as possible without the expense of adding annuals.

Actaea, also commonly known as baneberry, bugbane, or cohosh is a tall flowering perennial that smells like sweet licorice. I love how the native bees flock to this beautiful plant. This variety is a tall plant perfect for larger gardens that need a dramatic background plant. Its best planted toward the back of the garden.

Some late July bloom highlights. The bright red Bee Balm, and burnt orange of Sneezeweed and the non stop blooming white Salvia are so beautiful in this garden!
