❓ FAQ Friday: What Closing Chemistry Protocol Should I Follow for my Pool?

Proper winterization starts with properly balanced water. Before adding closing chemicals, test your pool first so you know exactly what needs adjusting.

Before closing:

🧪 Test all water parameters
💧 Adjust pH to 7.2–7.4
⚖️ Adjust total alkalinity to 80–120 ppm
🪨 Adjust calcium hardness to 200–400 ppm
⚡ Shock the pool
🌿 Add algaecide
✔️ Allow chlorine to return to the lower end of its normal range

One important tip: don't simply add a generic closing kit without testing your water first.

Pool chemistry isn't one-size-fits-all. Testing before treating helps you avoid unnecessary chemical additions and gives your pool a better starting point for the months ahead.

A successful spring opening starts with how you put your pool to bed in the fall.

🍁 Those Fall Leaves Aren't Just Making Your Pool Look Messy...

Leaves and other organic debris can quickly accumulate in an open pool during October.

As that material breaks down, it can affect water quality and create more work for your filtration system.

Until your pool is officially closed:

🍂 Skim leaves regularly
🧺 Check your baskets
💧 Maintain circulation
🧪 Continue monitoring your water
👀 Don't ignore sudden changes in clarity

The swimming may be finished, but pool care isn't finished until the pool is properly winterized.

A few minutes of attention now can save you from dealing with a backyard full of leaf soup later. 😬

A shortcut in October can become a repair bill in May. Three mistakes pool owners should avoid:

1️⃣ Improperly winterized plumbing
Water left where it shouldn't be can freeze, expand, and potentially damage plumbing.

2️⃣ Forgetting about equipment
Your pump, filter, heater, and connected equipment also need to be properly prepared for winter.

3️⃣ Closing without considering water condition
Poorly balanced or dirty water can make your spring opening much more difficult.

Our winters aren't particularly forgiving to swimming pools.

A thorough closing helps protect the investment you've made in your backyard, and helps give next year's pool season a better start.

FAQ Friday:

Q: Can I Close My Pool If the Water Is Green or Cloudy?

A: Technically, a pool can be winterized, but closing dirty or poorly balanced water can create an unpleasant surprise when the cover comes off in spring.

Leaves, organic debris, algae, and unbalanced water don't simply disappear because the pool is covered. Whenever possible, you want your pool going into winter in good condition.

🧪 Check your chemistry
🍂 Remove debris
💧 Address water-quality problems
👀 Don't ignore algae or unusual cloudiness

Think of it this way: the condition you close your pool in helps set the stage for your spring opening.

🎓 Pool School: What Actually Happens When We Close Your Pool?

A pool closing might look simple from the backyard, but there's important work happening behind the scenes.

Professional winterization focuses on preparing the pool and its systems for freezing temperatures.

That means paying attention to:

💧 Water levels and plumbing
⚙️ Pumps, filters and equipment
🔥 Heaters and connected systems
🧪 Water condition and closing treatment
🍂 Pool protection for the months ahead

The objective is simple: leave your pool properly prepared for winter and reduce the risk of preventable cold-weather damage.

Because what happens during your fall closing can have a big impact on what you find during your spring opening.

Want an Easier Pool Opening Next Spring? It Starts This Fall.

A proper pool closing doesn’t just protect your pool through winter, it can help make your spring opening easier, faster, and less stressful.

In our latest video, Jordan Battram, COO of GBI Pools, explains what goes into professionally putting a pool to "bed" for the season.

From starting with clean, balanced water to winterizing underground lines, pumps, filters and heaters, the details matter. Jordan also walks through GBI’s three main closing packages, salt cell care, cover and drain options, and à la carte services for pools with different needs.

Because no two pools are exactly alike, and neither are their closing requirements. Ready to put your pool to bed properly? Schedule your pool closing with us today!

There’s nothing quite like getting into a warm hot tub on a crisp Ottawa evening.

There’s also nothing quite like discovering it isn’t working when you want to use it. 😬

October and November are busy months for hot tub service, so September is a great time to get ahead.

A fall service can include:

💧 Water change
🧼 Filter cleaning
⚙️ Equipment check
❄️ Freeze-protection verification

Take care of it now so when the cold weather arrives, all you have to do is get in and relax.
