🦇 THE SECRET NIGHT LIFE OF CATHEDRAL BELLS! 🌌✨

Did you know the gorgeous Cathedral Bells (Cobaea scandens) blooming in my backyard right now have a wild evolutionary superpower?

While local bees and hummingbirds absolutely love visiting these massive, bell-shaped purple flowers during the day, back in their native mountain home of Mexico, these vines are actually built for bats!
It's a mind-blowing example of nature’s perfect design:

🎙️ Built-in Sonar Beacons: The unique "cup-and-saucer" shape acts like an acoustic reflector. When nectar-feeding bats send out echolocation clicks in the dark, these flowers bounce a distinct echo right back, lighting up like a neon sign on the bats' acoustic maps!

✨ The Perfect Fit: The flower opening is perfectly calibrated to the width of a small bat's shoulders. When they dive in for a drink, they get dusted with pollen to carry to the next vine.

🌙 The Night Shift: As the sun goes down, the flowers actually change their scent from sweet honey to a heavy, musky aroma to guide nocturnal creatures straight to the nectar.

I absolutely love watching this vigorous climber take over my garden trellis during the day, but knowing its secret history makes it so much cooler.

Torngat Mountains National Park sits at the northern tip of Labrador, where enormous glacier-carved fjords cut deep into some of the highest mountains in Canada east of the Rockies. Several peaks rise above 1,500 metres, with Mount Caubvick reaching 1,652 metres.

More than 40 small glaciers still cling to valleys here — the last glaciers remaining in eastern continental North America. Deep inside fjords like Nachvak and Saglek, cliffs rise abruptly from the water.

Polar bears move through the coastline. Caribou cross the mountain barrens. Wolves follow them, while seals and whales travel through the bays and fjords below. Parks Canada
But this isn’t simply wilderness.

The Torngats have been an Inuit homeland for thousands of years, with archaeological sites in the park dating back almost 7,000 years. Today the 9,700 km² park is cooperatively managed with Inuit, and its name comes from Torngait — “place where the spirits dwell.”

There are no roads or maintained trails through the park.

Auyuittuq National Park on Baffin Island is a landscape of enormous granite peaks, hanging glaciers, deep fiords and valleys carved through rock and ice.

Even its name tells you what kind of place this is: Auyuittuq means “the land that never melts” in Inuktitut. The park’s interior is dominated by the Penny Ice Cap, a vast mass of ice covering roughly 6,000 km².

Running through it is Akshayuk Pass, a 97-km natural corridor through a glacial valley. There isn’t even a maintained trail through the pass — hikers navigate through the landscape using valleys and enormous landmarks like Odin, Asgard and Thor peaks.

And then there’s Mount Thor.

One side of the mountain plunges almost straight down in one of the most extreme vertical rock faces on Earth. Parks Canada describes Thor Peak as having the longest vertical drop in the world.

Meanwhile, only about 20% of the park is vegetated. Most plant life is squeezed into valley bottoms and lower slopes while rock, tundra, glaciers and permanent ice dominate everything above.

You can cross the Arctic Circle here surrounded by granite walls and glaciers, in a Canadian landscape so enormous that people almost disappear inside it.
