Throughout these few weeks we will be sharing Summer Sketches 2026.

A new chapter in our summer sketchbook—today, as a part of the OAA Summer Sketches Series, we are sharing the work of Alistair Grierson (Architect).

This series of sketches grew out of a change in routine. Before becoming a parent, I would attend meetups with Urban Sketcher Toronto to draw from observation on location. Public places framed by urban elements were often the most interesting subjects, like a good neighbourhood fruit market, or big events in the City like the CNE.

A new chapter in our summer sketchbook—today, as a part of the OAA Summer Sketches Series, we are sharing the work of Grant MacEachern (Architect).

This year, I am adhering more closely to the call to "submit sketches of their past or ongoing projects, emphasizing creativity and design perspective," and am submitting a series of sketches from a current project that develop one of the early design concepts.

The following sketches are from a residential project in Toronto, where the homeowner is looking to add living space to their existing home. The sketches work through concept development to quickly test ideas for the formal and functional development of the project. These quick sketches help the client understand the direction and accept or reject the proposal.

Praxis House
This sketch depicts Praxis House; a sculptural residence featured on the cover of Eternal Youth by The Starting Line. Inspired by the music and imagery of the album, I sought out additional views of the house to better understand its dramatic cantilevers and expressive form. The drawing reflects how architecture can inspire us not only through buildings themselves, but also through the art, music, and culture that surround them.

Princess Margaret Cancer Centre Lobby
Drawn from observation while spending time at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. The sketch explores the light-filled atrium, layered circulation, and sense of openness that define the space. As a patient, I have come to appreciate how thoughtful architecture can contribute to comfort, dignity, and even a feeling of healing during difficult moments.
