A behind-the-scenes look at our recent work with (National Grid Electricity Distribution)

Over the course of two weeks, our pilots travelled across Cornwall, Wales and the Midlands, capturing high-resolution imagery of more than 500 pole-mounted transformers.

The imagery was collected using a consistent approach to support NGED’s innovation project, exploring how AI could help improve the inspection and maintenance of electrical infrastructure.

Ever wondered what kind of data we capture during our pylon inspections?

Here’s a look behind the scenes, followed by two different ways of visualising the data we’ve collected.

Using high-resolution imagery and photogrammetry, we can generate detailed 3D point clouds of the asset and its surroundings.

RGB provides a photorealistic view, while Land Use Classification (LUC) helps differentiate between ground, vegetation, buildings, powerlines and the pylon structure itself.

There’s a lot more to a drone inspection than just capturing images.

Ever wondered how the new DJI Dock 4 swaps the Matrice 5TD’s battery?

One of the biggest developments with the new Dock 4 is its automated battery-swapping system, allowing the aircraft to return, exchange its battery and prepare for another flight without waiting for the original battery to recharge.

The process takes just 25 seconds to exchange the battery, with a full turnaround from landing to the next take-off possible in as little as 45 seconds.

For organisations using Drone-in-a-Box for regular inspections, monitoring and response, this is a significant development, reducing downtime and making repeated flights much more practical.

4 reasons the DJI Dock 4 outperforms the DJI Dock 3.

The launch of the DJI Dock 4 marks a significant step forward in Drone-in-a-Box technology, bringing improvements that could change how organisations approach remote drone operations.

One of the biggest developments is automated battery swapping, allowing the drone to return, exchange its battery and prepare for its next mission in around 30 seconds.

Team UAV has completed a major drone inspection programme for National Grid Electricity Distribution (National Grid Electricity Distribution), capturing high-resolution imagery of over 500 pole-mounted transformers to support an innovation project exploring how artificial intelligence (AI) could improve the way electrical infrastructure is inspected and maintained.

Working across Cornwall, Wales and the Midlands, our team was responsible for planning and delivering the inspections, developing a consistent and repeatable approach to collecting imagery suitable for AI analysis.

Alongside the inspections, we built a custom GIS database and delivery process, allowing imagery to be uploaded from the field, linked to individual transformer locations and stored alongside relevant survey information and metadata.
