We’re delighted to have made it through to the final of Scottish EDGE with TreePly®.

TreePly is our home grown Scottish alternative to imported plywood. Made from Grown in Britain certified timber at our low carbon sawmill in Aberdeenshire, it’s designed to prove that high value, sustainable construction materials can be made right here in the UK with full traceability and dramatically lower embodied carbon.

If we’re successful in the final, the £100k award would help us take the next big step. It would fund essential fire safety testing, help us bring in dedicated sales support and accelerate the development of the product so we can get TreePly into more hands, more projects and ultimately help create more value from Scottish timber.

This journey started with a simple belief that our timber industry is capable of far more than we currently ask of it. Making it to the final feels like a huge moment for the team and for everyone who believes in sustainable British manufacturing.

Kiln drying is one of the most important parts of the process, even if it is rarely seen.

At Highland Heritage Woodworks, the kilns are powered using biomass wood chip, turning low grade material into the heat needed to dry timber properly. It is a far more sustainable way of doing things, making use of a resource that would otherwise have limited value.

Getting timber to the right moisture content is what makes it usable. Different applications need different levels of drying, whether it is structural timber, cladding or internal joinery. Get it wrong and the timber moves. Get it right and it performs exactly as it should.

It takes time and control, but it means producing consistent, high quality Scottish timber that is ready for real use, not just straight out of the saw.

New year, proper winter, plenty of snow at the sawmill but work carries on regardless at Highland Heritage Woodworks. The yard’s white, the kit’s ready, and the mill is very much alive. Biomass boiler is running as is the mighty drying kiln. Lots of exciting new projects underway for 2026!

Snow might slow a few things down, but it doesn’t stop good, sustainable, British timber being milled and delivered from the Forest to the front door!

Looking back on the year at Highland Heritage Woodworks
As the year comes to a close, it felt right to pause and take stock. Not a highlights reel, just a clear look at what the work has added up to.
This year was about building confidence in Scottish timber and backing it properly. From new conversations and collaborations to commissioning our biomass powered drying kiln, we gained real control and consistency in how we work.
We saw Scottish timber take centre stage through projects ranging from experimental design and careful timber framing to major public infrastructure and low impact work in sensitive landscapes.
People stayed at the heart of it all, through apprenticeships, social impact projects and craft led storytelling.
The year ended with our home grown plywood featured at the Victoria and Albert Museum. A quiet marker that capability, confidence and responsibility are starting to align.
Plenty more to do. But the direction feels right.

Scottish timber has taken centre stage at the V&A in London at the Make Good exhibition, and it was a real moment to see our work included.

Our CEO Guy made the trip down to South Kensington this week only to find the doors closed! But the accommodating V&A team kindly opened the exhibition just so he could take a peak. Walking through the space in silence looking at the materials and the ideas behind the project hit home how far the conversation has come.

Mixed species home grown timber is no longer a footnote. It is part of the future of building in Britain and it is good to see it recognised at this level. We are delighted to play a small part in that shift and grateful to everyone who is pushing for smarter use of the forests on our doorstep.

The exhibition is a collaboration amongst an evangelical set of small companies, trying to do the best for our home grown materials. HHW is the manufacturer of the home grown three ply boards, plus the glulam beams and hardwood knuckles. 😎
