🚨 Spotted "wood boring insect" on your home buyer’s report but don’t know what it is? Don’t panic, but don't ignore it either.

🪲 Wood boring insects is an umbrella term for any beetle species whose larvae chew through and destroy timber, gradually weakening property structures in poorly ventilated, high-humidity areas like sub-floor crawl spaces.

They tend to attack damp timber, munching through until your timber is at risk of breaking away and collapsing. Treatment is usually straightforward and damage can be mitigated if caught early.

Case study: A basement in Gloucester gets a new lease of life!

We visited a developer’s property in Gloucester to help develop a comprehensive basement waterproofing solution for a residential home. The solution had to adhere to BS 8102:2022 standards, making sure the space was safe for habitation and storage.

We had to ensure that the solution we came up with could withstand flooding, water pressure, and not interfere with the original structure of the basement. Read how we achieved it here: https://www.timberwise.co.uk/case-studies/basement-waterproofing-solution-gloucester/

Case Study: Damp and Condensation Control in a Terraced House in Hull

We completed a full damp and condensation inspection as part of a prospective homeowner’s pre-purchase survey for a home in Hull.

We had some challenges performing the inspection, but we uncovered atmospheric moisture and condensation, which was causing black spot mould in some key areas of the property.

The cause was a combination of a plumbing leak and a faulty damp proof course at the property that was causing rising damp.

If you’ve noticed condensation building up in your home, it can be tempting to put it off or assume it can be fixed by just opening a window more frequently.

However, that isn’t always the case. Condensation isn’t always directly caused by human activity and can be hiding a deeper, underlying damp problem that might need immediate attention.

We’ve all been there. At some point, we noticed that condensation had been building up in our homes. A minor nuisance some of the time and usually wiped away

Case study: woodworm in a stonehouse in Conwy, North Wales

Our recent case study takes us to a traditional stone house in Conwy. The building was a classic 1800s rubble stone structure that was experiencing a woodworm infestation in the first floor rooms and the attic.

While we got the woodworm outbreak under control, we found that the cause of the infestation was most likely due to slipped and missing tiles on the roof which was causing water ingress.

We targeted key areas of timber to treat, preparing them and spraying them with an insecticidal fluid to kill the infestation and prevent any recurrences.

A property in Banbury was experiencing severe problems associated with damp, which had led to visibly damp walls and deteriorating skirting boards.

Our team decided the best course of action to take was a chemical damp proof course barrier that would be injected into the mortar joints to prevent the damp problem from escalating.

Dry rot is a pervasive and destructive type of fungi that eats at the cellulose in timber, leaving it dry, brittle, and prone to breaking and collapsing.

While dry rot can affect almost any timber, it has its favourites of where it likes to set up shop and take root.

A student house in Middlesbrough was tackling a large problem of condensation buildup and black mould.

An external survey of the building found a number of defects that were more than likely causing damp pe*******on which was leading to the problems inside, including a faulty roof and blocked gutterings.

While we weren’t able to provide any remedial works this time round, we advised the client to book another survey with us in a few months’ time to make sure there is no rising damp at the house.

A team of woodworm had bitten off far more than anyone could chew with this property down in Oxford. A severe outbreak of the common furniture beetle had affected the ground floor hallway and staircase and caused enough structural damage that the timber was at risk of collapse.

We recommended and assisted the client with full timber replacements and an insecticidal treatment that would eradicate the infestation and prevent it from coming back.
