With families spending more time outdoors, it's worth thinking about tree safety. Check for dead or hanging branches above seating areas, play equipment, or paths. Don't let kids climb trees without supervision, and avoid attaching heavy swings or structures to branches that might not cope with the weight. Trees are wonderful features, but they do need respect. If something doesn't look right, trust your instincts and get it checked. A quick assessment can give you peace of mind and keep everyone safe. Get in touch if you'd like us to take a look.

Hedge trimming season is here, though we're working carefully around nesting birds. If your hedge is overgrown or blocking light, we can help. We trim to shape, reduce height where needed, and ensure tidy, professional results. Conifers, beech, hawthorn, mixed native – we handle them all. If there are active nests, we'll let you know and reschedule for later in the summer or autumn. Scheduled your hedge work now for August and September. Want a quote? Get in touch and we'll come and take a look.

Epicormic growth – what is it and should it be removed? 🌱

Those small shoots popping out along a trunk or major branches are called epicormic growth.

They usually appear when a tree has been stressed, heavily pruned, or suddenly exposed to more sunlight. It’s the tree’s way of reacting — not a defect in itself.

However, lots of epicormic shoots can:
✔️ Crowd the crown
✔️ Create weakly attached growth
✔️ Signal underlying stress

Removal isn’t always the answer, and clearing everything off can sometimes do more harm than good. Proper management means understanding why they’ve formed in the first place.

If you’re seeing heavy regrowth on a tree, we can assess and advise on sensible next steps 👍

Crown lifting is a useful technique when you need more clearance under a tree. Maybe branches are scraping the roof of your car, blocking a path, or creating deep shade in your garden. By removing lower limbs, we can raise the canopy while maintaining the tree's health and stability. During nesting season, this type of work may still be possible depending on the tree and any nesting activity. We'll always check carefully first. Done correctly, crown lifting improves usability without harming the tree. Thinking about it? Get in touch for advice.

Spring is when trees put on new growth, and it's an excellent time to observe their health. As leaves emerge, you can spot problems that weren't visible in winter. Is the crown leafing out evenly, or are there bare patches? Any signs of unusual discolouration, wilting, or stunted growth? Spring growth patterns tell us a lot about a tree's condition. Issues caught now can often be managed before they worsen. Even during nesting season, we can assess trees, identify problems, and plan appropriate action - whether that's immediate monitoring, treatment, or scheduling work for later in the year. Worried about a tree? Get in touch.

Not all tree work stops during nesting season. Deadwood removal is often still possible, as dead branches typically don't host nests. Removing these hazards reduces the risk of falling limbs, especially important near paths, driveways, or play areas. We'll always check the tree thoroughly first to make sure we're not disturbing any wildlife. If we find active nests, we'll advise on the safest approach and reschedule if necessary. Got concerns about dead branches? Get in touch – we're here to help.
