Thought it was time for a little hello on the grid!

I’m a professional, qualified garden designer and I love creating easy to care for, plant filled gardens that are a pleasure to spend time in and provide a space for nature too.

I work with people who love where they live and want to create an outdoor space that flows stylistically with their home. Feeling relaxed is so important in green spaces and I love designing low stress environments to enjoy in your downtime.

Sustainability is important to me and if there are elements of your garden that are already working or could be re-used I’m here for it! Climate change is also a reality and it’s more important than ever that we grow resilient plants that benefit wildlife too.

In my previous life I worked in broadcast television for over 20 years, commissioning creative work and managing creative teams. I wrote a lot of briefs, had major deadlines and dealt with big budgets - skills that are really handy in my day job now.

I started gardening in my 20s and love it! Over the years I’ve really got to know plants and gardened in lots of different environments (and had some useful fails!).

I’m currently on the accreditation pathway with my professional body, the Society of Garden and Landscape Designers - and nearly there….

Super excited to announce that I’m working with , Chilterns National Landscape and to create a Waterwise Garden at Chesham Station!

This project really couldn’t be more timely. The garden will demonstrate ways to manage rainwater in winter and showcase a range of easy to source plants that cope with winter wet and summer drought here in the Chilterns.

Importantly, it will also highlight the vital role that plant roots play in cleaning rainwater runoff before it enters the river system.

Information boards will explain what’s going on, including plant species for easy identification.

Thanks to Affinity Water 🦆 for funding the project, the build starts in September! Look forward to sharing some more details along the way 🌿

Some pictures from a visit to the Rewilded Walled Garden from a couple of weeks ago.

Seems quite timely that we were there so recently - it’s a really magical space with so much to teach in the era of rapid climate change.

Mounded topography is used to create dry free draining zones for drought tolerant plants and more shaded wetter lower zones for plants that can cope with those conditions. It’s filled with good groundcover ‘weeds’ as well as ornamental plants from all over the world - this means that what soil there is is covered for large amounts of the year which helps with carbon capture and the use of native and non native plants ensures a really long flowering season for pollinators.

It’s absolutely beautiful and I totally loved it! Really really worth a visit 🌿

Brilliant bee identification session this week with at the fabulous plant library

Some top tips!

- Solitary bees (there are loads, more common ones include red mason bees, mining bees and leafcutter bees) are messier and more useful pollinators than honey bees and bumblebees

- 70% of bees nest in the ground

- Thin soils in full sun are best for mining bees, but some species will tolerate clay - they love a patch of bald lawn, some bare earth or even better some self binding gravel. Some mining bees even return to the same place to nest

- Lots of solitary bees are active early in the year so plants lots of early Spring flowering plants like Crocus tommasinianus.

What else to plant?
- a good mix of native and non native plants work best. Solitary bee favourites include Campanulas, Field Scabious (Knautia arvensis); and Cat’s Ear (Hypochaeris radicata).

So embrace your scrappy lawn!

Honestly once you’ve started looking for the little bees you’ll find it hard to stop! 😂🐝

Super excited to be working with and designing planting schemes (and doing a bit of planting!) to encourage biodiversity and create green corridors through Dover town.

As in the Chilterns, Dover also has its own rare chalk stream which runs right through the centre of the town, so lots of plant and soil similarities between our two very distant areas.

This section was cleared of brambles and planted a couple of weeks ago and uses some slightly more well behaved cousins of plants found alongside chalk streams in order to manage any prolific self seeding - Lythrum salicaria, Eupatorium maculatum and Filipendula will all provide that riverbank feeling and heaven for pollinators while tough ground cover like Symphytum will help keep the weeds down and the management manageable!

Such a fab project with some wonderful people! Loving being a part of it and really looking forward to helping plant up the next section in a couple of weeks! 🌿

Finishing the week feeling a bit like this beautiful dog!

600 plants in and a meadow sown at this gorgeous location and I couldn’t have done it without the legends that are and .gardens! Thank you! 💚

Plants have been chosen to provide year round pollen and nectar to support the inhabitants of the local nature reserve and a beautiful journey down to the garden office. The meadow at the back of the garden has a little mown space in the middle for a couple of chairs and a glass of wine to watch the horses in midsummer. There’s also enough lawn left for a deerhound to get the zoomies! Fabulous project for lovely clients, can’t wait to see this one come to life! 🌿

A hugely exciting project this year, I’ve been working with and the to design resilient and sustainable planting schemes for Dover town which support biodiversity and require minimal input to maintain.

This is massively progressive for a town council to undertake and hats off to Dover Town Council for choosing to be at the forefront of climate action.

Last Monday we had a field trip to Colchester to tour the garden, meet the Beth Chatto education team and see some of the amazing work they’ve been doing in the town; Chattowood - a housing development where they have planted and maintain sustainable planting in sand, and the Meanwhile Garden - a hugely inspiring community green space filled with art and tough plants that creates a really immersive experience. We also got a peek behind the scenes at the propagation tunnels which for this plant geek was a total highlight!

Really looking forward to working with the local community in Dover to plant up the current phase and create more green corridors in the town 🌿

Site update on the Beaconsfield project- path, terrace and beds are in! Soil will be added between the path pavers for planting which will soften their presence considerably. Trees set out today, planting next week! Exciting! 🌿
