Planning permission granted! 🌿

We’re so pleased to share that our design for a new dwelling and pottery studio in the Lincolnshire countryside has received planning permission.

Working closely with a wonderful local family, we developed a design rooted in their love of nature, peace and family life, taking inspiration from the site’s woodland setting and surrounding rural landscape character.

The landscape design creates a series of peaceful, shaded arrival spaces, a naturalistic swimming pool close to the main living areas, and a layered garden offering spaces to relax, spend time together and explore. Carefully selected local materials help bring the architectural and landscape palettes together, creating a considered and cohesive response to its setting.

Developed through a detailed, iterative design process, including pre-application engagement and Design Review Panel advice, the proposal was considered under Rule 5 of Policy H011 of the NPPF.

A huge thank you to the family for their trust, and to Origin Design Studio Ltd., DesignMidlands and Ellicar 🌿 Natural Pools & Landscaping Specialists for their collaboration, advice and support throughout the process.

What if the most important part of a development isn’t the building, but the landscape it sits within? 🌿🏗️

Last Thursday, we had the pleasure of joining 3rd Year BA (Hons) Architecture students and tutors from the University of Lincoln UK in the shadow of the Humber Bridge, exploring how landscape-led design can shape successful, resilient and sustainable places.

The day brought together visits to Waters’ Edge Country Park & Visitor Centre, a restored wetland and nature reserve, and William Blyth Ltd, one of Britain’s last traditional handmade clay roof tile manufacturers, with a heritage dating back to 1840.

The programme also featured a guest lecture from our very own Design Director, Shona Hatton, who challenged students to look beyond individual buildings and consider the wider natural, cultural and environmental systems that shape the places we create.

From landscape character and ecology to water management, biodiversity and local identity, the message was clear: great placemaking starts with understanding the landscape. 🌍

For the next generation of architects, embracing a landscape-led approach offers an opportunity to create places that respond to their surroundings, strengthen climate resilience, support biodiversity and deliver lasting value for both communities and nature.

For the industry, it’s a reminder that embedding these principles from the outset is essential to creating more distinctive, sustainable and resilient places.

A huge thank you to everyone who contributed to such an insightful day. We look forward to seeing how the students’ ideas develop as part of Unit 2: Sponge City | Hydro-Ecological Territory, led by Denver Hendricks, and how they continue to shape the future of landscape-led design. 🌿💧

A wonderful evening celebrating landscape leadership, collaboration and the power of place. 🌿

We were delighted to attend the Landscape Institute President’s Dinner and Drinks Reception in Bradford last night, celebrating Dr Saira Ali FLI FRSA as she begins her term as President of the Landscape Institute.

Inspiring future generations is vital to the future of our profession, so it was a pleasure for Influence Landscape Planning and Design to be represented by our Graduate Planner, Keira Attridge, alongside colleagues, past presidents and industry leaders from across the UK.

The evening was a timely reminder of the importance of landscape-led design in shaping People, Place and Nature. It offered an opportunity to reflect on Saira’s career and the ability of landscape architects to influence positive change, create more sustainable places and deliver lasting benefits for future generations, regardless of background or the geographical lottery of where we grow up.

With Bradford marking the road to the Landscape Institute’s centenary, it was also a celebration of regional leadership and the vital contribution of landscape planning, design and conservation.
Thank you to everyone we had the pleasure of speaking with, and apologies to those we didn’t manage to catch up with on the evening.

Everyone at Influence wishes Dr Saira Ali and Ruth Holmes every success in their respective roles as President and Vice President of the Landscape Institute.

We look forward to working with you both to champion the value of landscape and inspire the next generation of professionals.

With Education Estates on day two in Manchester, education spaces are firmly in focus across the built environment. 🎓

At Influence Landscape Planning and Design, we’re proud to contribute to the development of inclusive, inspiring and accessible outdoor environments that support learning, wellbeing and a sense of belonging. 🌿

Our education portfolio spans specialist SEND school refurbishments, new school developments and campus facilities, with projects across Lincolnshire and Warwickshire.

In Lincolnshire, we were appointed by Willmott Dixon Dixon to deliver landscape design through to RIBA Stage 4 technical design for five SEND schools: The Priory School (now Tulip Academy) in Spalding, Willoughby School in Bourne, Eresby School in Spilsby, St Lawrence School in Horncastle and St Bernard’s School in Louth. Working with the project teams, we developed proposals that respond to the diverse needs of pupils, incorporating sensory gardens, school orchards and horticultural spaces alongside improved access, secure minibus drop-off areas and pedestrian routes.

Across Warwickshire, our work includes Oakley Grove School, Myton School’s sixth-form block, an extension to Oakwood School in Nuneaton, a new block at Evergreen School and the relocation of Shottery St Andrew’s CE Primary School to increase capacity from 105 to 420 pupils, including SEND provision. These projects feature a range of outdoor spaces, from secure external classrooms and sensory gardens to playgrounds, sports pitches, MUGAs and school orchards.

We’ve also contributed to the landscape design for Lincoln Medical School at the University of Lincoln UK, creating connected campus spaces for study, socialising and quiet contemplation, including a planted seating arena and a roof terrace for students and staff. 🎓

Across every project, our approach considers how landscape can do more than complement a building. Carefully designed outdoor environments can encourage exploration, support different learning needs, promote wellbeing and create places where students and staff feel they belong.

Sandilands | Access for all: Balancing sensitive conservation with visitor experience 🌿

How do you open a fragile nature reserve to the public without disturbing vulnerable wildlife? You design for it.

During Stage 4 technical design, we undertook two co-creation workshops with the National Trust team to establish three distinct visitor experience zones, balancing biodiversity protection with public enjoyment.

Our design catered to every demographic - from school groups and young families to bird enthusiasts and dog walkers:

👨‍👩‍👦 Visitor Centre and Amenity Zone: Family-friendly ‘play on the way’ features, short loop paths, and formal gathering spaces near restored dunes.
🌊Beach and Transition Zone: Clear wayfinding, seamless transitions, and elevated sea-view gathering points.
🌾 Wetland Zone: Tactile rumble markers and quiet-space signage guiding visitors smoothly into sensitive bird habitats, supported by bespoke hides and classroom shelters.

The result in numbers:

- 2.5km of accessible gravel paths
- 1.5km of mown grass tracks
- 200m+ of timber boardwalks across wetland channels
By designing inclusive, experience-led routes, landscape architects ensure high-quality green spaces are accessible to everyone, without compromising ecological integrity.

Sandilands | Living infrastructure: Building green infrastructure 🌳

Is landscape design green infrastructure? Absolutely.

Coastal landscapes like Sandilands are on the front line of climate change. Rather than fighting natural forces with hard engineering, our role as landscape architects was to harness nature-based solutions to build long-term coastal resilience.

At Sandilands, natural systems now deliver multiple benefits simultaneously:
💧 Water storage: Re-engineered wetlands handle peak rainfall and tidal surge events.
🌿 Carbon capture: Wetland soils and coastal vegetation lock away atmospheric carbon.
🌊 Coastal habitats, restoration and regeneration: Restored eco systems to create a more resilient and nature-rich coastal landscape.

Landscape architects design critical infrastructure for the 21st century - helping communities adapt to climate change through living, flexible, connected ecosystems.
