This project challenged our usual design language, which emphasised quiet restraint and the importance of every element.
The client wanted something different: opulence, where every surface has a purpose and communicates a unified message.
Upon entering, a marble fountain with a single brass faucet at the room’s centre immediately captures attention. This tradition in Islamic architecture symbolises water as a philosophical element, not just decoration. In riads, palaces, and courtyards, water served as a boundary between the outside world and the peaceful interior, cooling the air and creating a sense of silence.
The palette follows with delicacy, featuring warm stone, aged ivory, mosaics and soft blue in cushions. Gold is present but subtle, with brass fittings, chain details, and lantern frames that catch and release light. The mood is timeless, combining cool and warm tones, ancient and precise elements.
The intricate mashrabiya panels, originating in Islamic design from the 11th century, filter light, direct airflow, and allow observation without intrusion. The 8-pointed star, khatim, appears throughout, representing harmony and the infinite in Islamic art.
This project demonstrated that restraint and richness can coexist. Sometimes, the most thoughtful approach is to fully commit to the world you’ve created.
