Materiality : Landscape

At ZMA, 'Inside Out' is more than a phrase - it’s a philosophy that runs through our work (and even it's own TV show!).

Many of our clients come to us looking to reconnect their homes with the gardens, views and landscapes beyond. Through carefully framed openings, generous glazing and considered material choices, we look to dissolve the boundaries between inside and out, allowing the landscape to become an integral part of the everyday experience of a home.

For us, great architecture isn’t just about the building itself, but how it connects us to the world around it.

Materiality : Stone

Stone carries a deep connection to place, shaped by local geology, regional building traditions and generations of craftsmanship. The UK has a rich history of stone masonry, with its influence reflected in the architectural language and material palettes of our built environment.

At Chelscombe, located within the wider Bath limestone region, this heritage is woven into the fabric of the existing site. The marks left by stonemasons offer a tangible record of the hands that shaped the building, connecting its material character to the landscape and craft traditions that surround it.

Continuing our materiality series this time looking at the connection of old and new materials.

The meeting of old and new materials creates a dialogue between past and present. Through contrasting textures, tones and finishes, each material brings out the character of the other, allowing the building’s history to sit alongside contemporary interventions.

It’s a poetic juxtaposition that tells a story through the architecture - celebrating what was there before, while embracing what comes next.

Lambeth have announced that the Cressingham Garden Estate has been saved from demolition. This really is great news for us in Brixton. We know that the existing buildings have issues, some of them serious around insulation structure and water ingress, but you can’t ignore the importance of the community that grows in an estate like this, or the need to protect it!
Other councils have successfully been able to redevelop larger estates by the phasing works, decanting groups of residents and successfully keeping that critical network of human connections and making sure it is cherished and forms the basis of any future regeneration.
Watch this space! Or rather that Space!

Brixton House: Leaving a Legacy

Recently, Zac, Ed and Paul joined Brixton House for Leaving a Legacy - reflecting on the vision, collaboration and challenges behind bringing Brixton House and Carlton Mansions to life.

The talk included a tour led by Ed, offering a closer look at the theatre spaces and the flexible studios that support Brixton House’s diverse creative programme.
What began with a community-led ambition in 2008, rooted in the belief that “Brixton knows what Brixton needs”, has helped transform a once-neglected site into a thriving cultural space at the heart of the community.

While the wider Somerleyton Road masterplan has yet to be fully realised, Brixton House and Carlton Mansions stand as important achievements. The project demonstrates the lasting impact of bringing buildings back into use, protecting cultural heritage and creating spaces that remain open and accessible to the public.

For us, this is what leaving a legacy means: building saved, culture protected, community strengthened.

A huge thank you to the Brixton House team for hosting such a thoughtful discussion.

The building may be complete, but we’re giving the landscape a little more time to recover after a very hot summer.

As the planting begins to regrow and the gardens settle back into place, the final piece of the project will come together - reconnecting the house with the landscape that surrounds it.

After months of hands-on construction, careful detailing and true craftsmanship - through rain and sunshine - Orchard House is now complete.

We began the project in 2022, transforming this family home within the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just outside Cuckfield.

The existing house had a limited relationship with its surrounding landscape. Our proposal replaced the dated conservatory and outbuildings with a new side extension, creating stronger visual and accessible connections to the gardens.

Corten steel, generous glazed openings and concrete panels form a contemporary material palette, carefully selected to sit alongside the tones and textures of the existing tiled dwelling.

The building work is now complete - and we’re looking forward to seeing the landscape recover and the final chapter of the project take shape.

After securing planning permission in 2025 for this one-off home, we’re excited to see the project begin on site in the coming weeks.

Set on the boundary of Greenwich Park, within an existing ancient orchard and less than 500m from the Greenwich Meridian, this is a particularly special site - and a project we’re looking forward to seeing take shape.

The design maximises the home’s connection to the surrounding green spaces, with a material palette of locally sourced brick, stone and timber helping to reduce embodied energy and root the house within its landscape.

Working closely with to design a 100% timber structure, with dramatic exposed glulam beams spanning the main living spaces. We also collaborated with to secure a highly sustainable approach to heating, cooling and energy use.

And now, the existing part begins... keep an eye out as this project starts to take shape on site!

RIBA Sussex Women in Construction Summer Social

It was a lovely full-circle moment returning to the campus, having only recently been there for ZMA’s own summer social - this time seeing it through a different lens.

As young women in architecture, having the opportunity to meet, connect and learn from other women across construction feels genuinely invaluable - particularly in an industry where these spaces can still feel male dominated.

A big thank you to and Women in Construction Sussex for such a welcoming and inspiring evening. Here’s to more conversations, connections and collaboration!
