A 2026 RIBA National Award win for Kepax Bridge!

“Inspiring delight, enhancing place, and supporting long-term environmental and social objectives” - the Kepax pedestrian and cycle bridge demonstrates that good design is the vital ingredient for infrastructure that serves both community and context.

As 2026 RIBA Awards Group Chair Neil Gillespie noted, this year’s winning projects show how architects, working with ambitious and enlightened clients, can continue to create places and spaces of exceptional quality and value in increasingly challenging times. Kepax is a testament to that approach - made possible through the shared vision and collaboration of Worcester County Council, , , and the wider design and delivery team.

Now well into its second summer, the bridge is fully bedded into its site and the daily routines of residents across the city. By the end of the year, it should welcome its one-millionth user.

Mountain Rescue Centre | Braemar, Scotland

Great to see the extended Braemar Mountain Rescue Centre featured in the . Delivered with and BMRT, the project supports team welfare, inclusivity and operational efficiency through a robust, flexible and cost-effective design.

Channel View | River Taff, Cardiff

Together with we have been granted planning approval for a new pedestrian and cycle bridge across the River Taff in Cardiff. The 165m-long bridge is part of Cardiff Council’s ambitious Channel View Estate regeneration scheme and will improve connectivity and accessibility, encouraging active travel at a local and city-wide scale, while providing a new leisure destination for the city.

The new crossing will connect surrounding neighbourhoods, Grangetown and Butetown, with locally popular green spaces, The Marl to the west, and Hamadryad Park to the east. It will also serve up to 360 new homes along the western riverbank, better connecting them to the City Centre and Cardiff Bay.

Located where the River Taff widens as it approaches Cardiff Bay, the bridge alignment has been shaped by its proximity to the Louisa Shipwreck, a Scheduled Ancient Monument, and the new Channel View Estate.

Aylesbury | Buckinghamshire

These photographs are of the first rural footbridge to be lifted into position for , and in collaboration with and .

Engineered to withstand high-speed pressure waves, this series of exceptionally well-made weathering steel structures will keep local communities seamlessly connected across the new railway.

This particular bridge – known as ‘FMA/1’ after its public right of way designation in Buckinghamshire - will also be the first to open later this year, on the completion of the permenant alignment, connecting the bridge to the public footpath.

Great Fen Visitor Centre | Cambridgeshire

An old favourite - proposal from back in 2012 for the Great Fen Visitor Centre, near Huntingdon.

Inspired by the patchwork landscapes of East Anglia, the building reflects the fens through overlapping spaces and the varied use of timber, corrugated sheet and rammed earth. Conceived as a viewing device, it frames shifting perspectives across, into and onto the fen ecosystem itself.

Two volumes define the proposal: one partially submerged, housing café and support spaces at water level; the other held above the landscape, containing the entrance and exhibition areas. Between them, an ‘upside‑down’ courtyard opens to the managed fen below, bringing the landscape into the building as an exhibit in its own right.

Turan Farm | Shaki Rayon, Azerbaijan

Located near the southeastern foothills of the Caucasus Mountains, this project transforms a 2,835 sqm abandoned agricultural shed into the operational heart of a new sustainable arable farming development cultivating extensive olive and almond plantations. The retrofit preserves the existing precast concrete portal frame, integrating it into a modern, high performance building envelope.

The 143 metre-long structure now accommodates a diverse programme including staff and visitor accommodation, workshops, offices, and storage for agricultural vehicles. At the western end, the building expands its role by incorporating high end hospitality spaces designed for leisure and corporate use.

As part of a wider masterplan, the project also introduces a terraced landscape designed to harvest rainwater for irrigation of the olive and almond groves. The new building envelope is constructed with locally sourced natural materials, including stone and timber, carefully detailed to complement and integrate the existing concrete structure.

Les Benoits | Provence, France

A contemporary residence rooted in Provençal heritage.

This two‑storey dwelling is designed to sit quietly within the rural landscape of Provence and in dialogue with the nearby historic hamlet of Villars. The project preserves and reuses the site’s existing agricultural buildings - restoring them as a workshop and pottery studio - while introducing a new home that complements their character.

Generous archways on the ground floor open the interior to the north and east, framing views toward the surrounding countryside. On the first floor, a balcony extending from the primary bedroom overlooks the northern garden, creating a private vantage point across the site.

Two lightweight glazed links connect old and new: one bridging the restored structures with the new residence, and another linking the studios at ground level along the boundary wall. Their transparency and delicacy contrast with the solidity of the original stone buildings, reinforcing their historical significance while enabling a fluid, contemporary way of living.

Kepax Footbridge has been shortlisted for a West Midlands Award 2026.

Kepax is a graceful, sustainable pedestrian and cycle crossing that curves over the River Severn in Worcester - one of the UK’s most flood-prone river corridors, and demonstrates what robust, climate resilient infrastructure can look like.

Designed to maintain pedestrian and cycle connectivity during periods of flooding, Kepax supports active travel and community connectivity while responding intelligently to its landscape and setting. As flooding risk becomes more frequent and severe, we hope Kepax offers a replicable model for climate-resilience infrastructure across the UK, blending design, functionality and form.

Worcester County Council’s continued commitment to accessible public infrastructure is commendable, and it has been a pleasure to work with and Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd on this project.

Corriebeg | Sauchen, Aberdeenshire

Impossible to resist a snow day when a project has just been handed over…

This extension near Sauchen in Aberdeenshire amplifies light, views and connection to the landscape - bringing daylight deep into the plan, aligning with key arrival points and framing long views across the agricultural setting. Built to Passive House standards, the performance jumps from EPC B to A, cutting carbon and maximising year-round comfort. Technical robustness and efficiency is combined in the design with informality and playfulness - reflecting both the needs of the family and the spirit of the rural setting.
