Rediscovering Le Moulin: A historic watermill landscape in southern France 🇫🇷
What can the remains of an old watermill reveal about the landscape around it?
Working with architect Nigel White, we recently undertook a preliminary survey of Le Moulin, a historic mill complex in the Tarn region of southern France.
Beyond the surviving mill buildings, we discovered traces of a fascinating hydraulic system, including historic dams, water channels, sluices and remnants of water-powered machinery along the River Dadou.
Millstones, wheel chambers and other surviving features offer clues to how water was once harnessed to power the site. There are also intriguing signs of a possible former sawmill.
For us, this is a reminder that historic buildings cannot always be understood in isolation. The surrounding landscape, engineering and watercourses are integral to their story.
Our investigation is an initial step towards understanding the site's history, assessing what survives and exploring how this remarkable piece of industrial heritage might be conserved for the future.
