A little “behind the curtain” of the office; the PWS sample wall started as a small collection of cladding samples, some plants, a few 3D prints here and there but has slowly grown itself into a staple of the design process internally.
With the addition of a small table area for sketching and model making it sees more and more use as time goes on.
The samples are used frequently internally for inspiration and discussion as well as in the wider world with our clients as needed.

The wall also houses a series of trinkets and gifts from clients and sites which are often nice reminders of the work we do for wonderful people and properties.

Finally the PWS library lives here housing magazines, catalogues, design guides, detail booklets, guides etc for ease of reference and inspiration. A small selection of the latest journals sit within the seating / meeting area (adjacent the coffee machine of course) where we have some additional display books in circulation.

(Almost) ready for planning

The scheme comprises of a reconfiguration at ground and first floor to improve the flow of the property with separated snug at the main entrance the utility / side entrance affords the user to land in the heart of the property which has been opened out for a brighter more open feeling space and usability between all floors and spaces. This leads to a new open plan area flooded with natural light (which hinges on very specific and key window design and placement) and constructed of natural materials with low VOCs and breathability honouring the traditionally built building but with modern design aesthetics and materials.

At first floor a series of awkward landings and unusable room has been altered to provide additional usable space, views over the gardens and beyond, and access to the new master suite within the loft providing breath taking views and sanctuary.

A concept scheme we designed last year to bring back a collapsing grade ii listed barn back to life as a 5 bed family home.

Throughout the plan there are a series of mezzanines to make use of spaces where verticality allows housing the bed spaces for the kids bedrooms, snug space above the living area and even a hidden play space accessed by climbing wall.

The house is completed with open plan living making use of the palisade of arches overlooking the listen foldyard and a wellness extension housing a sauna.

Project update

Located within a greenbelt, the project comprises of the removal of a current conservatory and replacement with purpose built timber framed extension, internal reconfiguration, deep retrofit and new roof forming two en suite bedrooms with Juliette balcony over existing extension to create a comfortable eco friendly multigenerational home with retrofitted new insulation throughout, air tightness, HVAC and cladding which reimagines the tired old exterior.

The property will also support a solar array and airsource heat pump to reduce its operation carbon impact.

We’re thrilled to share this transformative green belt project which is now ready to go into planning. The design wraps around the existing home with timber-framed construction, combining stone and zinc cladding with a slate roof that honors the original character while adding a contemporary and modern twist.

Complete with a reimagined ground floor with open-plan living introducing natural light, plus a reconfigured upstairs featuring a guest suite and revamped bathroom layout.

From the material palette to lots of hidden architectural tricks the extension celebrates the client’s vision while strengthening the connection between home, inhabitants and garden.

Had a visit this week to one of our older projects; a threshing barn conversion within the curtilage of a listed mill.
We removed a ring of poor‑quality extensions that concealed the barn, restoring its original form and setting.

The barn was sensitively upgraded: historic floor slabs carefully lifted and relaid, wood fibre insulation and insulated lime render to the envelope, and a limecrete floor with underfloor heating for breathable comfort.

A modest replacement extension, on the footprint of a former add‑on, provides two ensuite bedrooms with a plant roof for the air source heat pump.

Together, it complements the existing 6‑bed Airbnb in the mill and sits beside the on‑site hay shed wedding venue—bringing new life to the site with a fabric‑first, low‑carbon approach.

A sensitive expansion that enhances family life while respecting its Green Belt setting. Our proposal includes:
- First floor added over the existing extension + a loft conversion to create 3 additional bedrooms
- Slender three-storey side extension to enlarge a current bedroom / bathroom and provide a generous en suite to the existing master bedroom.
- Wine cellar for curated storage.
- Part-submerged gym with sauna and bar, tucked into the landscape to make usable garden space this is accessed by a faux orangery forming a light filled stairwell.
- New garage with widened access and drive for improved arrival
- Discreet solar array to cut operational carbon
- Balcony to the rear to encapsulate views from the master suite.

Designed to preserve openness and minimise visual impact through compact massing, stepped volumes and carefully balanced materials and glazing. Targeting high performance and everyday wellbeing. Subject to planning.

A few years ago we undertook an extensive internal reconfiguration, extension and full modernisation to transform a once cramped house into a standout architectural home.

The pivotal move was a structurally glazed rear extension that now holds a combined kitchen, dining and living space. By removing the former outdoor “netty,” a small garage and an unusable utility block, we unlocked the depth of the plot and created an open‑plan heart that flows directly onto a new terrace—perfect for modern living and easy entertaining.

From the front door, you’re immediately drawn through the home toward a light‑filled glass pavilion at the rear. A bespoke steel, oak and glass stair acts as a sculptural spine, guiding you past what were once a series of dark, cellular rooms.

Today, long sightlines, borrowed light and carefully framed garden views make the home feel calm, generous and connected.

Beyond aesthetics, the project focused on function and longevity. Replanning improved circulation and zoning, gave every room a clear purpose, and introduced discreet utility and storage solutions. Services were upgraded, the building fabric improved, and new glazing enhances comfort and efficiency throughout the year.

For Halloween we’re sharing a playful side and back extension that makes the most of its sloped site.
We transformed the former kitchen and storage offshoots into a hardworking boot room, then relocated the kitchen to the true heart of the house elevated to overlook the living/play area and right down the garden. The split-height plan delivers a dramatic, light-filled interior… and what play room would be complete without a slide?

Happy Halloween from all of us at PWS.
