The scariest thing I'll see this Halloween isn't on anyone's doorstep.

It's in a cupboard under the stairs. A brown plastic fuse board, porcelain fuses with bits of wire in them, and nothing to cut the power if someone touches something live.

There are more of them out there than you'd think.

If you open your cupboard and see old fuses instead of switches, or no button marked TEST, get it looked at. An EICR is £224 + VAT and tells you exactly where you stand.

A proper test and an honest answer. That's all.

Landlords, a quick one.

A rented home in England needs an electrical safety test at least every five years. Anything flagged has to be put right within 28 days.

If you've got more than one property, book them for the same day. Every property after the first is £25 + VAT less, and adding PAT testing of your own appliances saves another £25 + VAT.

EICR £224 + VAT for up to 8 circuits. Report emailed the same day, with the next due date on it, and a reminder before it comes round.

The clocks go back tonight.

Darker evenings mean more lights on, more heaters and, before long, the Christmas lights.

A two-minute job for this weekend: open the cupboard with your fuse board and find the button marked T or TEST. That's your RCD, the part that cuts the power if something goes wrong. Most say "test quarterly" on the label. Press it and the power should go off straight away. Switch it back on and you're done (you might need to reset a clock or two).

If nothing happens, or there's no test button at all, that's worth a proper look before winter.

Machine code at eleven. Fuse boards now.

It started with a ZX Spectrum and a pile of Everyday Electronics magazines. I wrote my own compiler.

I started in 1988 with a four-year apprenticeship in the car industry. Robots, welding controllers, paint plants, PLCs. Then semiconductors, where I travelled the world servicing the machines that make chips. I earned a degree in maths and computing with the Open University, studying after ten and twelve-hour days.

In 2007 I started S Barker Electrical. That's 19 years now.

Two things came with me from that engineering world. You test to a standard, because in a chip factory a glance isn't a test. And you write down what you find.

Then I moved from Leeds to Sheffield and had to become the local electrician all over again.

Seven numbers I wish everyone knew before they ring an electrician.

5 years. That's the most a rented home in England can go between tests. It's the law, in regulation 3 of the 2020 rules.

10 years. That's the recommended gap for a home you live in. It's advice, not a legal rule.

28 days. If a rental's report flags work, that's how long a landlord has to fix it, or less if the report says so.

2 to 3 hours. A proper EICR takes that long, and the report runs to seven pages or more. If yours was done in an hour, ask what was tested.

£224 + VAT. An EICR for up to 8 circuits, with the report emailed the same day.

£819 + VAT. A 7-way fuse board, fitted, with the EICR included and a 10-year workmanship guarantee.
