Behind the Scenes at Croft Architecture

What does a typical day in the office look like?

Today, Salisu is working through point cloud survey data, transforming millions of measured points into accurate architectural drawings that will form the foundation of future design proposals.

From planning applications and barn conversions to new homes and commercial developments, every project starts with understanding what’s already there.

📐 Point cloud surveys allow us to create highly accurate existing drawings.

☕ Coffee keeps the process moving.

💻 The technology helps us design with confidence.

It’s often the work that happens behind the scenes that has the biggest impact on the success of a project.

Whether we’re working on a home extension, a rural development opportunity or a complex planning application, accuracy at the start helps deliver better outcomes later.

What project are you planning this year?

Many people think architects simply draw plans.

In reality, we help clients navigate everything from land opportunities and planning challenges to technical design, Building Regulations and construction.

Whether you’re extending your home, developing land or delivering a commercial project, we can guide you from the first conversation through to completion.

This rural barn conversion project presented significant planning challenges from the outset — including strong local opposition, complex planning negotiations and multiple changes within the planning department during the application process.

Despite the obstacles, the scheme ultimately secured approval and has now been delivered successfully, transforming a former agricultural site into a high-quality residential development.

Our post highlights the journey from early planning uncertainty through to construction and completion.

If you are considering a barn conversion, rural redevelopment opportunity or a site with complex planning constraints, we will be attending the Staffordshire County Show on 27th & 28th May at Stand Q256 and would be very happy to discuss your project.

Thinking about converting a barn?

Barn conversions can unlock incredible opportunities — from creating unique homes to diversifying rural assets and maximising the potential of existing buildings.

At Croft Architecture, we work with farmers, landowners and rural families across Staffordshire to navigate:
• Structural viability
• Planning constraints
• Heritage and countryside considerations
• Design opportunities
• Rural planning policy

Every barn has its own challenges and potential, and understanding the planning strategy early can make all the difference.

If you’re attending this year and would like to discuss a barn conversion, development opportunity or rural project, come and visit us at Stand Q256.

We’d love to meet you.

Permission in Principle Approved ✔

We’re pleased to have secured a positive Permission in Principle determination for a residential development proposal.

Permission in Principle can be an extremely effective planning route for establishing the principle of residential development at an early stage, before committing to the time and cost associated with a full planning application.

Projects of this nature are often heavily policy-led and require a carefully considered planning strategy from the outset — balancing development potential alongside planning policy, site constraints and wider contextual considerations.

A great result for the client and an important milestone in progressing the project forward.

Chelsea Flower Show week is here

We visited Chelsea last year and these were some of our highlights from the show.

What’s always interesting is how Chelsea shapes wider conversations around architecture, landscape, wellbeing and how we want to live at home.

Gardens increasingly feel like:
• Extensions of the home
• Outdoor living spaces
• Places focused on wellbeing and connection to nature

This year’s themes around biodiversity, resilience and naturalistic planting feel particularly relevant.

A question for everyone:

👉 What makes a great garden for you?
