Flashback to a piece of Cambridge history 🖌️✨

The team has been flat out on school and commercial projects, with finishing touches going on across several of them right now, so while everyone is heads down on site, here is a look back at one of our favourites from 2025.

Spillers Mill in Cambridge, where we carried out an exterior white refresh on a landmark absolutely steeped in local heritage and character.

The project was completed in conjunction with Coulson Building Group, a respected name with over 135 years of experience delivering exceptional building and maintenance projects across East Anglia.

Originally built in 1896 for the Foster family and later acquired by Spillers bakery in 1947, the mill has been carefully restored and now comprises 19 individually designed luxury apartments at the heart of the CB1 gateway regeneration project, directly opposite Cambridge train station.

We are proud to have played a small part in helping preserve and enhance this iconic building for years to come. 😍

Warm neutrals have quietly pushed grey out of the door🫸

Grey had a very long run and it is finally stepping aside. We're noticing that homeowners are now choosing warmer, softer neutrals with a hint of clay, oatmeal or stone running through them. Shades like these sit beautifully against Stamford limestone and they hold their warmth even on a drizzly afternoon down by the Meadows, rather than turning cold and slightly blue the way brilliant white can.

Warm neutrals are also very forgiving in a busy family home. Sticky fingerprints at toddler height and the odd stray football mark all show far less than they would on a stark white wall.😂

A big thank you to the wonderful team at Devonports Kitchens & Bathrooms in Deeping St James for bringing us in on this recent decorating project.

The kitchen they have fitted looks superb. The cabinetry is beautifully done and the whole space has been finished with a real eye for detail. We decorated throughout the house, so the finish carries from the kitchen into every other room in this stunning family home.

Gloss has quietly disappeared from most of the rooms we decorate. Ten years ago every skirting board and door frame in the country was gloss white.
Now it turns up mainly on period woodwork where it belongs, and everywhere else has moved to matt and eggshell.

There is a reason beyond fashion. Gloss throws light straight back at you, and it shows every ripple and filled patch underneath. Matt absorbs light instead, which softens a room and is far kinder to old plaster.

Eggshell is the compromise we specify most often. Enough of a sheen to wipe clean, not enough to bounce light around the room, which is why it goes on hallways, kitchens and staircases as a matter of course. Anywhere with bags, coats, dogs or children, marks come off rather than soak in.

Choosing the right finish for each room is half the job, and getting it wrong is expensive to undo. We will walk round with you and tell you what will hold up where.
