Peugeot locking wheel bolts..

These are literally thee most common job I come up against statistically. This particular design fitted on 2012+ Citroen, Peugeot, some later Vauxhall, some Toyota vans are the least reliable and most abundant locking wheel bolt on the road today. They can malfunction in several ways, most of these jobs are due to a problem occurring rather than lost keys, just about everything that can go wrong does go wrong. They can..

• Have the collar collapse so the key no longer locates into the notches.

• Collar totally comes away from the bolt and gets stuck in the key rendering it unusable.
• Splines strip out so the collar just spins.
• Collar rounds off so the key jumps out.
• Centre post shears in half like what has happened here, this is less common than all the other possible defects mentioned above.

If just one bolt has failed I always recommend swapping the lot out for standard bolts to save any future problems 😅

Porsche Taycan locking wheel nut removal job today. Porsches are another one of those that come like the busses. Don’t come across one for weeks and weeks and then come across several in a week.

Usually it’s quite rare that these are damaged because people are often put off even attempting them and risking damage to the wheels 🛞

Ford Transit Custom, owner said it’s got 3 locking wheel nuts fitted and rest of the nuts are in quite a ropey condition and said change the lot if necessary.

Offside front wheel had evidence of past trauma where that was removed in the past by some clowns with previous owner. New nut went in way further than it should do. Upon closer inspection they’d ploughed a hole saw down it and cut the wheel away where it tightens up so the new nut went right down to the brake disc and was doing nothing 🙈

So now he’s after a whole replacement wheel

Someone had a right go at this one first and dismembered it with all sorts of tools.

I’d been initially contacted about it when it wasn’t so bad and then this happened to it because they didn’t want to wait as I was busy and had already left the area with a list of jobs in various locations to get round. All sorted now though. Please bare in mind failed attempts that result in serious damage can add more cost and delays because if a job takes longer to put right I have to plan time carefully as they’re not always straight in-out jobs.

Sometimes simple looking jobs can be the toughest challenges 😆

One of today’s jobs, a Ford fiesta with minor damage to the nut turned out to be the most heavily corroded Ford nut I’ve ever seen on one of these. Removing it was like a gym workout and once the locking wheel nut was out, the wheel was absolutely bonded on the hub with that horrible steel-alloy corrosion.

I’m not afraid to admit I had to stop for a minute for some breaths of air to get my strength back halfway through taking this out 😅

2018 VW Amarok earlier today, I knew these have the ability to use a locking wheel bolt on the spare wheel but this is the first time I’ve actually come across one. All the other 4 needed to come off too due to a lost locking wheel nut key and flat tyre.

Although I don’t fit tyres I always offer to throw the spare wheel on if you have one as a matter of courtesy 🙂

Mercedes with the locking wheel nut key pattern sheared off inside the bolt. Some air chisel damage too and it was badly seized into the hub, but it’s nothing I haven’t come across many times before.
