A very busy week! Hundreds of miles travelled around the south west attending to a wide variety of organs great and small.
Taddiport on the other side of the river from Great Torrington was built as the leper’s church. The little organ looks the part and is reliable but quite a woozy sound. Installed from another location 50+ years ago by one Michael Lock a descendant of the long gone Cornish firm of Chenery & Lock.
Up into Dorset and Wiltshire for tuning and maintenance work. Lovely to visit the peaceful village of Iwerne Minster with its splendid 1913 JW Walker: a quality instrument.
On to Great Durnford in the Woodford Valley near Salisbury. A beautiful historic church in a peaceful location. The organ was one of our rescue operations ; someone had taken it down and abandoned it. A sad story but it ended well. A tuneful little number without being flamboyant.
Then on to one of our favourite destinations St John’s Devizes. The instrument is settling very nicely since installation. A fine recital on Saturday by John Challenger to a good size audience.

Congratulations to St Ia at St Ives on the appointment of an organ scholar. Looking to the future and encouraging young people to take up the organ is so important.
Also this Wednesday sees the latest of the summer series of recitals. A train ride , lunch and the opportunity to listen to a fine Hele organ; a perfect day!

It seems nowadays that there are lots of instruments that we may not see for two or three years. So you just have to do your best to keep them going and to as good a standard as you reasonably can. Three Devon organs that fall into this category ; St Mary’s Exbourne near Okehampton and in tne Plymouth area St Mary’s Plymstock and St John’s Hooe.

Here is an interesting number that I don’t think we have shown you before: Lavington United Reformed Church Bideford.
A very grand church, premises in good order in the middle of Bideford with two fine spires. The interesting organ known locally as ´ the old lady of Lavington’ originally an 1863 Sweetland with a large swell added by Vowles on pneumatic action . The instrument has been out of commission for several years as they have been using a toaster! The pipe organ is very run down but with playing for a while and running scales up and down it soon livened up. The instrument makes a glorious sound with its good full specification. Among its long line of ministers is the Rev Michael Hodgson a noted pastor and preacher and a good musician now living in retirement in the area.

Forthcoming recitals at St Ives : put them all on you calendar now
There isn’t one this week but Martin Palmer of Truro is giving the next one on June 10th; who doesn’t want a trip to glorious St Ives in June?

Pleased to say that we have tied up most things at North Perrott ; not our kind of organ! Has not been an easy one to deal with but interesting in its own way.
Then a new one to us at Ditcheat ; always a surprise these very grand Somerset churches with a sturdy Vowles instrument in reasonable condition but dusty. Mr Osmond might have added a great Fifteenth on a pneumatic chest; not so successful but hopefully reliable.
Friday is usually our local tuning day; just nice recently in the Cornish sunshine.

We are considering taking on an extra person to join our team. Would you be interested? Do you know a young person who might be interested? It would need to be someone fairly local, not necessarily musical but practical, keen to learn and not afraid of hard work.

Friday is usually a local tuning day. If we can have glimpses of the sea that is always a bonus. A favourite day of the year is to visit St Anthony, Manaccan and Coverack all harmless instruments that give no trouble at all.

North Perrott coming along slowly. Time to get Giles in to sort out the mains electrics; hopefully moving the instrument away from a very damp wall and fitting some strategically placed heaters will help this unusual organ survive.
We also visited a quaint little instrument this week which we haven’t seen since before covid! Milton Damerel near Holsworthy in Devon. A basic little number: most of the innards are, we think, John Guest of Exeter possibly using an older case. Simple but provides for their needs.
